Just goes to show how iportant each stage is and that an excellent model could easily be destroyed by another texture artist in a studio lesson be learned. But you never know I would love to watch an animtion about a hagrid scottish terrier that in reality is a freaky Egyptian God. I think I smell a series coming on.

Hey Ruzz - woof woof! No I actually use LightWave :) And here is a pic of what my god looks like...

Kaiskai - hehehe what a cool idea! Hahahaha! I think someone should do it... ;)

oooooooh I can't wait to see what kind of texture you use for the taught flesh around the rib cage and such, rotting flesh or those horrible blemishes and greenish grey hues of bruised kinda liverspots kinda thing oh the opportunities. make us proud with this one lots of opportunities.

Hey if the models they provide aren't very good could I have a stab at this guy??? PLZ

leigh
04-16-2002, 01:54 PM

C4D and bodypaint are what I'd use to do it but you could give me a 3ds no prob or tell me what other imports you have and I'll tell you the best format.

But I agree we'll see what is available first.

Hello again

Mike Pauza - see below :)

.::STRIKE::. - yup, I use Lightwave. Because it is the best ;) Btw I love your new avatar

Ok, well I finally had a couple of hours to start texturing this bugger last night, so I put on an ABBA cd, sat down, took my wacom in my hand, and voila!
As you can see, it's still VERY rough - I've obviously only been working on the skin so far. I decided to start with the skin because there is a hell of a lot of it.
I've only done rough colour, specular, diffuse, bump and gloss maps so far. I want to do a translucency map a bit later on as well, although because the skin is supposed to be dead and papery, there won't be too much warm translucency, so I'm going to leave that til last. That kinda iffy procedural bump map is only temporary.
I'm hoping to have a chance to continue working on him again later, so hopefully I'll have an update tomorrow :):)

04-21-2002, 04:01 PM
Hey thanks, .:STRIKE:. :D It's so cool to see another Lightwave user! :p

Ummm....also, I forgot to explain something - the reason why he is all cut up and stuff, is because he is the god of mummification, and the Egyptians used to remove certain organs from the body during the process, such as the liver, heart, etc, and those cuts are supposed to kinda portray that. I did say when I first designed this guy that he was going to be a bit stylised, so I'm going to go a bit wild on artistic license to make him the way I would imagine a god of death and mummification to be - an incarnation of those 2 things. He is going to look dead and mummified! :bounce:

And he is a god, so he can bleed aven if he is dead :D heheheheh
I just really want to make him look really vile.... :bounce:

LucentDreams
04-21-2002, 10:25 PM
One note for you though I wouldn't chane it if you want it to look vile, but I believe that they organs weren't actually dissected out but really they forced a drink down their throats that would literally burn up the internal organ or liquify them but just leave it as is. when you get to the nose though make sure that one nostril is a little stretched out and quite roughed up with maybe a little of your godly eternal blood around it as they would have shoved a long sorta hook thing into their head to pull the brainout through the nose. ANyways I am about to eat breakfast so I think I'll stop here, mmm this pizza looks especialy good now.:D

eirenicon
04-22-2002, 09:51 AM
Actually, the internal organs were removed and would be placed in the tomb in their own little containers.

Looks disgusting

leigh
04-22-2002, 12:48 PM
Yup, as TimothyD said, they used to extract the vital organs which would get placed in special little ceremonial jars and stored in a sarcophagus of their own. :)
You are 100% correct about the brain removal procedure - that's really gross, eh? :p
Hopefully, I'll have an update later, I wanted to have one today, but I ended up working ALL night because of a deadline :(

SO I just had the freakiest experience, I thought I'd check out what cgkoko had to say about your work when I suddenly look at your avatar leight and your eyes are movin in perfect rhythm to my music (The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkle) I was already thinking that I could use some sleep and know I think I am going mad. But i am having so much fun working on Martin's Tiger that I am getting to the point that I wish I had no life again just so I could do this more often as opposed to school assignments (well I mean they are still drawing an animation assignments but its not the same when you have to get them done and its not for fun or money.)

Anyways thanx for the info on mummies you never know when this stuff'll come in handy and can't wait to see your next update but I won't rush you as you are way ahead of me (thought I don't think you model needs20 some odd UV maps and thats not including the area that won't be using fancy UVW maps.:scream: Anyways a ittle more mapping and then too bed. I 'm going on about nothing and now your eyes are moving to "its a hard knock life" from Annie:buttrock:

04-22-2002, 02:05 PM
LOL - that is really funny, Kaiskai! Heheheh spoooooky  That kind of thing often happens to me too, but that's because I really am mad, and I haven't taken my pills for a while now (really)...

heheheh, actually I am gonna have about 15 or so UV maps to do - I'm doing a really precise and detailed job on this guy, and I want to ensure that it all works beautifully, so I'm working on it little section by little section....
That makes me realise just how much work I still have to do.... :(

chrislomaka
04-22-2002, 05:40 PM
excellent work, Leigh! personally, i like the egyptian god of small annoying yappy dogs ;)

realy creepy texturing. i've found blue to be a really nice touch of color to add for deadish bodies, but it seems to imply a more frozen feel... so that migh not work here now that i think of it... but touches of grey would probably be the desert equivilant... and maybe some spots of yellow (yellow ochre)...

i think the metal should be a little more corroded/tarnished, too. you still want a contrast between the metal (shiny) and the skin (matte), but being the god of death/mummification/afterlife, he probably doesn't spend much time polishing his brass bellybutton ring...

really great work. keep us posted.

leigh
04-22-2002, 05:59 PM
Thanks a lot Chris :D Hey, funny, I was just looking at your body mouse - OMG over 100 000 hits!!! Well done - you're bloody famous!
Hmmm... the blue is actually bruising, it's not really for the dead look. As you can see, I had a ball adding revolting bruises around the cuts :D:D Now yellow.... WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT??!!! That is such a cool idea!! My god he is going to be disgusting bu the time I finish with him...
Hehehehe - the metal I haven't even touched yet. That's just the assigned surface colour - there is no actual texture there yet :p You didn't think I would make something so clean, did you?
I'm probably going to start doing a rough texture of it soon though, because it kinda puts me off when I'm doing the skin to have this crappy shiny cack staring back at me....

Lorenzo - thx :) the head is actually going to be covered with hair. Actually, his shoulders and back are going to be quite hairy as well, and possibly his hands and feet too. But as for the skin all over the body, it will all be like this, with lots more cuts and stuff. Kay sorry for sounding like and idiot, but I use C4D XL7.3, and I haven't even touched LW since V5 first came out (don't hurt me leigh) but I was curios as to this glss channel. I haven't encountered that specific channel. what exactly does it do and have you seen the same thing with other names. I figure ity should be a common channel but probably named different liike how Alpha is sometimes called Genlocking and such.

I suspect by the overall black and just the highlights that this could be done in luminance but Ireally don't know. Very nice leathery feel, I have been struggling with that for the leather pads and restarted the texture today but I have decided to spend a little more time with procedural texturing to make sure I have time to get this thing done

Sorry for not knowing but we are all here to learn right

ANd leigh what do you think of 7.5's new features???

Hey there
Well I took a day off work and got a start on the hands. And here it is....
I'm still not 100% happy with it, especially the bump and colour maps. But I will tweak that this evening.

Kaiskai - glossiness? Doesn't C4D have that? It's how you control the spread of the specularity - I'd be really surprised if your software doesn't have that. I thought that one was universal... That is really bizarre... I do know, for instance, that Max has it, it's called just Gloss, and you also use it it the same way - the higher the gloss amount, the tighter the spread of light on the surface is. So, for instance, a plastic texture has a high Glossiness to get those tight streaks in the specularity.
You might be pleased to know that I have written a long workshop that I am going to post on the Texturing Forum later today, which is the start of a whole series that I will be doing. These workshops go into great detail about every aspect of texturing. :)
And yeah, 7.5 is going to kick some serious ass!! It's being made available for download today, so hopefully I will have it soon!
Anyways, have a look at the hand - as usual, comments and crits most welcomed :bounce:

WOWOWOW:bowdown: (my new personal fave)

Unfortunatelyfind one crit from this otherwise flawless texture. The skin after the hairy nuckle and before the nail is too smoothe, you also mights want to consider the fact that the skin like in your ribs, will be taught creating little folds and such from stretching. Hope that helps

As for "gloss" I am still confused, partly cause what it sounds like you are describing would be tha actual specularity controls, while you have a specific map for gloss which is what caught my eye. I remember strata having a gloss channel but that was the same as my specualr colour channel. I am including an image of the C4D/BP material editor so you cancheck and see what it might be equialent too. You'd think with BP being used along with max and lightwave, then it sould have this too.

leigh
04-25-2002, 02:08 PM
About the skin before the nails, well I looked at my own hands, and if you look at yours, you will see that the skin just before the nail is much smoother and shinier than the skin on the rest of the finger. Unless I have weird fingers.... I think it's because the skin is pulled tighter there. I might still change it though, because he IS dead, after all...
Hmmm.... about that elusive gloss channel. Your texture editopr doesn't seem to have it! I don't think that Specular Colour is the same thing, because that's the same (I think) as Colour Highlights in LW, which is basically how much of the surface colour is in the hightlight. Perhaps gloss is in your actual spec controls... But it really should have a channel of it's own :hmm:

LucentDreams
04-25-2002, 02:32 PM
Kay no worries about gloss then, looks like yet another feature that seems basic buti s missing from XL :shame:

Anyways, you are right it is smoother, but at the same time there are still wrinkles, just far more subtle and perpendicular to the wrinkles on the joints. pinch the skin un the textile side of your finger at the nail and then release and you'll notice how it goes from smooth to slightly smoothe with slight(and I mean slight)wrinkles extending from themerging of the nail and the epidermis. still this is all really minor so noone will notice unlsee he becomes a hand model (this image is actually quite funny when you think about it.)

leigh
04-25-2002, 03:12 PM
Hey, thanks for the tips, Kaiskai - you are right about those wrinkles. I will add them tonight
Heheheheh... a hand model.... now THAT I'd like to see, they can use it in one of those tacky engagement ring posters

Well to add an idea for him being dead. You might let some insect's (maden <-- Dutch name for them) that come out of his stomach, So it gets really gross. On the other hand, by now he’s dead for a couple of centuries.

:buttrock: Leigh, I'm GREATLY impressed !!
May be only tendons or veins of hand...
- BTW How is seems veins without blood within?

chrislomaka
04-25-2002, 10:12 PM
wow  really great work Leigh! i love the hair.

about veins... i think there should be MORE :> they definitely give me the creeps. even dead people have bulging veins; but then they're usually filled with some formaldahyde or something... if there's nothing in there, would the big veins collapse into canals-like furrows?

i'm not too keen on the (greenish)nail color. black is way over-done, but i think it might look nice here (once it's on something other than a black background); or... now that i'm thinking... a nasty yellowish-brown, just translucent enough to show all the nasty dirt caked on underneath... heh... same grungy bump map, tho.

really great work, so don't let the length of my ramblings on what might be better fool ya;) keep it up!

leigh
04-25-2002, 10:20 PM

Leigh, let me just say that you truly are a texturing goddess! Those T-maps really look sweet. I think you are definetly headed in the right direction for a mummy-style skin. I had a question for you: are you going for a realistic mummy look where it is all dried out and leathery...or are you going for more of a "fresh" rotten, slimy look. Right now it seems to me like it could go either way.

The hand is awesome Leigh!

The two tiny things that bother me apon reflection are:

1)...the way his bumpmap stops abruptly as it goes up his fingers towards the arm.
2)...his arm hair - shouldn't it curve around his hand instead of comming down fairly straight?

Hope this helps. BTW my favorite part of your project so far is the belly texturing. Nice stuff. Oh yeah...can't wait to read your ideas on texturing when I have some some.

leigh
04-26-2002, 09:14 PM
Hey there Mike
Thanks for the suggestions :)
I did consider making the arm hair more combed, but decided to keep it wild to make him more animalistic :)
The reason the bump map ends abrubptly is because I haven't made the arm one yet :):)
Thanks for the belly compliment - I can't wait to get back to it....

Oh my... Icky (In a positive way)

A suggestion: Make the flesh wound on the torso a bit wider at a certain point, and fill it up with small greenish-white maggots. That combined with some green slime would add to the creepiness.

The hand is prietty interesting.

The desaturated green/brown color really helps push the 'hey! I'm dead' effect.

The lighting appears too one-directional and makes the hand appear very flattened visually. How about adding some sort of fill or bounce light opposite your key (under the hand and to the left of the image)?

This would give the hand a bit more shape. Perhaps color the fill light something opposite on the color wheel to your key, perhaps a desaturated dark blue tint?

Also, why are the wounds tinted/splotched with red? Are they supposed to be sore or is that blood? Either case, red suggests a freshness that detracts from the 'hey! I'm dead' effect. It might be better to make them appear rotten and bruised.

A study of rotten/bruised fruit might help resolve the best way to show trauma on something without staining fluids (ie blood)

Hey Leigh,

Looking good. Have you thought about putting some suture scars around the main gash in his chest, as if there had been an attempt to crudely sew it shut at one time?

Just a thought.

Looking forward to seeing the whole package.

Leigh...you've done this texturing thing before haven't you? as i said before, the hand looks cool! you should have his stomach rip open with the entrails pouring out of him. that would be gross yet entertaining. i think you're capable of such gore. can i call you master?

Johnny_Scott & Kaiskai - thanks a lot for the comments and suggestions :) The thing is, because he is a god, I decided that he can be dead yet have bleeding wounds anyway. Actually, the reason I made him appear dead in the first place is because he is the god of the dead, and the wounds are symbolic of the cuts the Egyptians made to remove the vital organs during the process of mummification. I will certainly check out some rotten fruit as reference, as I intend to have him rotten, bruised AND bloody :p
Also, Johnny, thanks for the lighting tip, I'll do that  I actually haven't really started with the lighting setup yet, but I suppose I should seeing as it will give me a better indication of how the textures will look in the end... :)

TheWolf - entrails, eh?? Hmmmm... maybe at a later stage, when I finally animate him ;) And, you can call me mistress *crack of a whip*

The idea of cutting him for egyptian ritual is just wonderful.

It creates quite a vivid and living picture. I think that you should find a way to make the scars/cuts appear ritualistic and not like simple trauma (it seems like you're already thinking about this).

It will create quite an impact if you can visually demonstrate that these cuts were made to remove his organs per ritual.

I don't know how you can make this point subtley though. It may be enough to make the cuts appear precise and purposed instead of gashed out.

Perhaps flourished sutures with some elaborate pattern. Or perhaps some sort of hieroglyphic tatoos.

How did the egyptians close their cuts? Were they very careful in hiding them? Did they use a glue or sutures?

So far, beautiful work. The history you've come up with is really solid.

Thanks a lot :)
I think I'm going to do some research into all that, and see how it was that they treated the wounds...
I think your idea of markings/tattoos is quite cool... I would imagine they used sutures of some sort...

pcbehmer - yep, I'm using LW and Sasquatch. Well, actually, Saslite which is the version that comes with LW. Unfortunateyl with the lite version, there are some restrictions, so you have to set it up rather cunningly... I still have to tweak the leather straps, finish the texturing on the neck armour, and finalise the look of the legs. As you can see, the material of his clothing also still needs a weave to it. I'm working on it! :wip:

Leigh its looking great i love the specs in the blood and the staining on the cloth is a very cool touch, perhaps you could just add a bit more detail to the skin maybe some peeling or something.anyways the wound looks gruesome and very convincing ,the specs on the blood really bring out the difference between the dry and the still fresh blood.I dig it and hope it keeps going cool.

my goddess,

this lesser mortal humbly suggests some thoughts

:curious: i think that being a god, he must have a lot of metallic embellishments; since he is going to be a badass punk god, the rings are nice, but his belt doesnt even have a buckle or metal trimmings. a big, oval buckle would be nice

:buttrock: i'd love to see those cloth with hieroglyphic designs and stuff!
i'm just wondering, would a skirt look more egyptian? looking at the wounds, maybe the cloth could have gotten tattered or something. it would be a nice effect (and i know you'll love it cuz you love chaos). but then this may be an amftermath already, he already took a shower and changed

:curious: the size o that chest wound would open his skin wide and expose some muscles/bones, some pus and icky yellow and white stuff (unless he's stitched up, of course) over stressed muscle tissues (think "lasagna")

:xtreme:i love those wrist bands!
how do you do that soiled effect?

:xtreme:cool tatoos!

i am fervently praying i will be forgiven with all this blasphemy.

Hey thanks for all the comments and suggestions everyone  I'm having difficulty keeping up with everyone's idea, and time is running out :argh:
To answer some questions:

Adam - actually there is a spec map, but I kept it VERY low as I want the skin to appear kinda dried out, and papery (where it isn't bloody, of course ;))

chi - yeah I miss the glowing nip rings too, but I switched off the bloom filter to speed up the rendering...
I'm also still working on the neck armour.... aaaarrrggghhh one day to go only....

chrislomaka - I'm kinda scared to look behind that loincloth myself ;)

chlywly - yeah I'm working on it

levin - thanks for all your suggestions oh you mere mortal! hehe Actually, the reason her has no fancy embellishments is because mostly he's supposed to look kinda like a mummy who's bandages have fallen off. So unfortunatley, there will be no belt buckle
Hmmmmm yeah I' still working on the cloth. But I'm not sure if I'm gonna have time to make any drastic changes though...
Now as for the gore issue - I was REALLY hoping to do lasange type stuff with maggots and all that, but I just haven't had the time. Work has been REALLY busy for me this month, and all in all I think I've only had about 18 - 22 hours of work on this guy.... Needless to say, he hasn't turned out nearly as detailed as I had hoped... I'm going to see what I can hastily add tonight...

Mike Pauza - the reason I have such dark lighting is because he is the god of death and I wanted him in a gloomy environment...

Well, I don't want to be rude, but I really don't find your skin texture convincing : the specular doesn't look right, and the diffuse is, well... it looks like a photoshop cloud filter.

I also think that the fabric looks more like paper than to a real cloth.

I appreciate nevertheless the scars, really well done.

I hope you won't be angry ;)

PS : I thikn that my impressions could come from the lightning : it could be better

chrislomaka - I don't think I'm gonna have time before the challenge ends to add detail like that, but I will see what I can do at a later stage ;)

Hey Joebount, thanks for the comments  , of course I'm not angry :) I posted the images for crits, and thats what I expect to get :bounce:
Okay, firstly the spec - I didn't really want much spec as the reference pics I have of old rotten mummies are very dry and papery. So the only real spec I have on it is around the wounds, where it is obviously a wee bit gooey. There is also a *really* faint spec to go with the skin grain. But that's it.
Ummmm the diffuse should actually be right. It's basically a greyed version of my colour map (ha! I would never stoop so low as to use that confounded clouds filter!! eeewwwww), and just kinda tweaked here and there for some added richness. The colour map was done in a blotchy kinda style, in the same way as Iron Maiden's mascot Eddie has always been done (that was my main reference). And once I had the rotten aged blotches, I added bruising around the wounds - is that what you are referring to??
Oh and the fabric is supposed to look kinda papery - they used to make their cloth for mummies from papyrus reeds.
And ummm the lighting isn't great, you're right. I do want it to be kinda gloomy, but I haven't tweaked it to perfection yet.

Gilgamesh
05-16-2002, 07:18 PM
Yeah, specularity....I've seen mummmies that look oily rather than dried out, kind of like treated leather. Perhaps you could try that look?

leigh
05-16-2002, 07:29 PM
Heheheh I actually did some research into that because Balistic mentioned that look too, which I thought was very cool. But what I discovered, is that the mummies that have that gross icky oily look are only found in Northern Europe - especially in Denmark, in the bogs (swamps not loo's ;)) there.
And when I tried it out, just as a variation, it didn't look too great, it just didn't suit my character

Nice bitmaps on the skin etc. but a little procedural breakup/falloff color would give the skin that eery drained but still organic feel. (I know it's supposed to be leathery) It just seems like the shading of the skin is black.
