I'm sorry that if forgot to say that the concept art was done by Teerawat and not by me....
Here is what i have up till now. There is like a few hours worth of work here.
Tell me what you think, and what do I need to do to make it better?

This is what i have so far....
What do you think can be done to add more detail to the look of the character??
What is a good way to do feathers...Do it with maps or try to scatter feather geometry..
In the past, what has worked best for you??

very cool character! but isn't he a little scary for kids? I mean, I wouldn't have been able to sleep for nights on end after i'd played this game, fearing that there'd be a 4 armed pupil-less bird-like being in my closet....
kinda reminds me of those evil beings courage the cowardly dog encounters in his adventures. (on cartoon network)

by the by, im useing advanced painter for max 5.1 to do all the feather on the head. I just made a feather mask and painted the feather on the direction that i want them to go.
here is the mask...

Yes a great character here!! I like the design and style very much  ..Can't wait to see him completed and posed. My only suggestion would be to give him some jewlery, trinkets or maybe a staff....he looks like the type that would enjoy those kinds of things :)....Once again, nice work and keep posting updates!!

Great modeling and character design! :applause:
Sorry - nothing to crit, so I´ll just join the choir: UPDATE! ;)
Care to tell a little more about advanced painter for max 5.1? How you did the feathers. (I´m not a Max user but your work on the feathers has made me really curious if the method could be translated to other 3D soft than Max.)
Anyway, gotta love that character!

Pit: Ill tell you what I know.
1. I install advanced painter and dropped it into one of my quads. I then went down to the randomizer after playing with all the other cool stuff.
2. Then I picked my feather plane that had my feather maps on it. You can pic more than one map at a time and paint on the surface and it will randomize the placement.
3. Chose the way that you want to paint the feathers on. When you use this you can tell the feathers to follow the brush and look in the direction or perpendicular to the way that you are painting.
4. The min. distance tells the painter how far apart to place the feathers when you paint.
5. If you are using a Wacom you can go here and use the brush pressure to tell how many, size, or both.
After that just have the object that you want to paint selected, and get to work.
Although there are a lot of faces, the render time is not that bad. My whole bird rendered in under 2min. That is with six lights, two casting shadows. I did try the ole' light tracer and skylight. Due to all the planes and bouncing of shadows, when I left the computer and came back after two hours the first 1/20 of the feathers was rendered. So not so good with the light tracer.
Other than that a good tool for hair and other scattered stuff.
Hope that helped.

This guy turned out really well. Nice work. Have you thought about an environment to put him in?
BigRanS123

Well, it does feel good to be back in the fourm.
HousFly: How are you doing out on your own? And speaking of the environmet, here is what I did in just TWO days. It has a fast render time that is under 12sec.
So this is the time when I open the show up for comments!!
Any, and all are welcome.

I give a big yes! I think the island is coming along great BigRanS123!! You've done a wonderful job on that weather vien...I think some lamps done in a similar style would look great on each side of the bridge...you could also add some vegatation and dirt to the bricks, they look a bit clean right now. I really like the way its coming along and I think your bird man is going to look great in that envirmoent, keep going and keep posting!!

Awesome work, mate! Wish I'd visited this thread earlier on, probably too late to implement any changes this far down the track.
The thing that bothers me the most is the hat - it seems way too big - and all those feathers coming out the back of the hat? not sure what that's supposed to be (unless its an integral part of the story perhaps?), all tends to make the char look like he's/she's/it's (hehe) way too top heavy.
And the eyes - small eyes are scary, especailly for kids. Kids find large eyes more friendly cause they show emotion much more.
And maybee if the feet were a little bigger that could make the char less scary too.
:lightbulb The feathers are very well done indeed , I'm sure a few peeps out there will be using your method from now on. Nice textures too :)
The island is looking sooo cool, roots and tree and all ! :applause: Keep up the good work !

WOW!!
Thanks for the feedback. Not to many people give real feedback.. I think the kids story was more of a Tim Burton style..
There are many things that I would like to go back and work on, but it is time to move on. I need to just set up some better lights and one or two textures and will call it a finished piece. I will go in and do some work on what Fetus had said. And by the way Fetus, thanks so much for stopping by and helping me.. With all the stuff that I have going on right now, It sure helps to hear what you all feel about the stuff that I’m doing. I will try to get some stuff put together here soon..
till then..
