After trying to self-teach digital painting to myself, I realised I was completely hopeless and so referred to a tutorial which will hopefully help me understand digital painting much easier.

I am using a sketch I did as reference along with some shading to help guide me

currently this is my status now, still trying to make the eyes and lips much better as well as adding highlights, at this point I have given up on my wacom and start to rely more on my mouse since my wacom is giving me tons of problems like pressure sensitive and position detection

You haven't got a CRT monitor too close to your Wacom, have you? That can interfear with it something chronic. Apart from that, the only other instance I've heard of Wacom tablets failing is when you don't have the correct drivers installed. Try going to Wacom's website and having a look arround for the latest drivers availible.

As for the image, the anatomy looks pretty correct to me. Just keep working on your shading and make sure you have a good idea of where your light source is, for shadows.

Really nice work, so far. The anatomy (except for her "trout pout" lips) looks very nice and balanced in proportion and positioning.

I agree, make sure you have the latest drivers for your Wacom, and if you have a model with the 3 pressure buttons on the top (I have an Intuos and Intuos II), that might help.

You don't say what software you are using. I believe that CS3 has some Wacom issues, check the Wacom site.

This is developing well. Look forward to the update.

wacom patch is updated, the problems seem CS3 specific since my tablet has nothing wrong with flash 8 or opencanvas. Any suggestiongs to fix the "trout lips" ?

'Pop' them a little. :) Make them look less beestung. It'd be a good idea to find some reference images of women's lips. I've also noticed this time arround that the chin might stick out too much. It looks as if when she closes her mouth, her lower jaw would stick out further than her upper. It might just be the lips playing tricks on my eyes, though. Fix them first.
