I have Maya 6.5. Okay, so trees don't render using Mental Ray or Hardware Render - right.
Ocean doesn't render using Hardware render.
Bump maps don't render in Hardware render - right.

When I go to place a Maya tree on a polygon grid (it's been made paintable and snap to point set) the move point isn't at the base of the tree. Even when I "Modify - Center Pivot." Any ideas on how I can place "stroke" trees?

Hi, for exact placement of the trees on special places (in situation where you have terrain with road and house) I have made the grid live and from top view I painted alot very short curves (one curve for every one tree, where I want to be) then I used from pfx curve utilities something like "add stroke to curves" ( I'm not shure how exactly was named). By this way you can later to move individual trees by moveing their curve.
If you dont need exact placement I think there was tool for populating (filling) pfx on grids, but cant remember how was named.

When you've done what dickagm says, you'll have to check 2 small things:
in the brush: verify the BrushWidth value
in the stroke: verify the SurfaceOffset
