I have a question that might be dumb, but how would I go about doing a 3D tracking of a feature, lets say a head?

The project would involve attaching a 3D helmet on an actors head. Lots of tracking points or any other contraption on the actors head would not be a problem since the 3D helmet would be quite oversized. Is this something that would be done with mocap or is it possible to obtain something usable just from an HD video of the performance using tracking software? The animation would not be to hard to do manually but if there is any other way to do this, your help would be greatly appreciated.

you can use boujou for tracking and export the data in the 3d software renden with alpha and composite in after effects or another video program sorry for my english

for object tracking I don't think boujou is the best option, I tried a couple times and is kinda tricky...maybe you should check realviz matchmover or syntheyes, they are more intuitive for object tracking.

personally I use boujou for matchmoving a scene and matchmover for object tracking.
