This whole quicktime/avi thing has been bugging me lately, as more windows users on CGTalk seem to be moving to using divx/xvid codec with embedded mp3 audio. So, if you're a mac user, there are two problems really: 1) You need a codec to handle the file formats, and 2) apparently, there's a bug in the apple avi codec so it doesn't play mp3 audio properly in AVIs.

There are a few codecs available. The best one I've found is at:

http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html

With the codec installed, you will now be able to at least *see* the video in your browser, but the sound will stutter.

To fix the sound, you need to run the file through a patching application calld Divx Doctor II, from the same URL. The file will now play properly in the Quicktime player.

In IE you can configure your helper app for AVIs to be Divx Doctor (post process with application), and there are settings in Divx Doctor that make it run, shutdown and open the file in QT Player.

In Safari, I haven't found a way to configure helper apps, so you're stuck with saving the file to disk by right clicking, and then proceeding from there.

If anyone knows any better solution for this, I'd LOVE to hear it.

:hmm:

Cha cha cha...

Thanks for your efforts, mang...

I've heard of various apps that'll play anything you toss at 'em floating around out there (for Mac OSX), but frankly, since playing windows-spawned video clips isn't a real big part of my computer use, I've never bothered to tinker with anything but QuickTime Pro.

And IMHO, QT is next to godliness.

:airguitar

(P.S. Until I read the "airguitar" input code for the above smilie, I always asumed he was supposed to be spanking someone's ass.. like, ":who'syourdaddy". Am I alone on this one?)

I use "Divix doctor" and it works for most Divx AVI's
its a great app.

and the 3IVX codec is as good as divx for compression and quality
i wish apple had adopted it instead of that" members only" MP4 codec:rolleyes:

yeah, i think those are the best tools. it just bugs me that I have to save the files to disk to bandage them, rather than playing them in the browser.
