I just remembered the other problem i've been having-- everything gets all screwy when I try to move subobjects along local coordinates. I haven't figured out how to make screenshots, so I rendered a pic of what I mean. This is a plain old box, with the Edit Mesh modifier on it. I set the reference coordinate system to Local, grab the four vertexes on the right, move them in what's supposedly the box's X direction..... and, well, you see what happens. That look like the X direction to you? It sure doesn't to me!

if you use the local system every vertex will move on its own x axis. this is the nature of local coord. i think the x-axis on every vertex will show to the center of the box. so all vertices move around very differently.
use the view coord. system instead to move all selected vertices in one direction.
sceenshots are done with "print screen" key above the cursor keys. open photoshop and paste the screen into a picture.

Oooo, so if I wanted to move all of the vertices in the box's X direction, I'd -pick- the box for my coordinates system and use that! Handy!! It makes sense now, thanks! And I'll try that screenshot thing!
