very nice! incredible detail!

the only thing i can say is that his legs look pretty stubby as opposed to the length of his arms. but maybe you're after that look(?) other than that? right on

As promised ,

Here are the next stages or this little project , I am undecided weather or not to give the beast a tail, I'm thinking I might try a longish lizard like tail, that would keep with the reptile / horse look.

Still have to add some tubes from the tanks to the mask and the reigns to controll it with, any other suggestions welcome .

Comments and crits please ; )

The major thing I would criticise about the beast model, is that although you've got loads of detail on the guy, the beast looks a bit sparse - looking at its nose, it looks very boxy and the neck is really lacking in definition - it almost looks as if you're going for a totally different style. Obviously, you can add a lot with bump mapping and stuff, but I think you could do with putting some more geometry definition in there to break up the silhouette slightly - you know putting some musculature in there and stuff.

On the whole though; looking good man!

Thanks Mattrne, just the sort of crits I'm looking for .

I just grabbed some great pics of some rhinoceroses off google , so I know exactly what you mean , skin sag and rolls , creases and muscle bulge etc etc .

The nose is boxy because of the Gas mask, so I cant do much about that , it will make more sense when I have textured it , I'm not looking forward to that though , my texturing leaves a lot to be desired ; )

Perhaps some bulge where the mask is pressing against that face will do the trick .

Stay tuned for more updates .

All you need to do is try and remove the hard edge - I'm sure you could round it off a bit - after all, saying I can't do it because of the gas mask seems to me to be the lazy way out - if it was a real creature, they would make the gasmask fit rather than change the dna of the animal!http://www.clanjadefalcon.org/cgtalkpics/ride-on-with_ropes_compress_crit.jpg

Hi Mattrne ,

I know what you mean , The mask is a style choice , and I did model the animal before I modelled any of the accessories .

As you can see in the image the nose of the beast fits well within the mask .

I'll post the update in a sec.

Heh heh , Thanks Maximus .

Mattme , Here is an update with what you suggested , now , I'm a complete novice at anatomy, so tell if this looks bad .

Comments welcome as always .

Nice one, bro! I dig the style and the proportions you have going.

Joe could use some more detail on his upper body though.

See ya!

Sorry if i sound like a moaning bastard, but although its getting closer, i think those rinkles look a wee bit too regular... he could also do with a bit of this kind of stuff on his legs and hooves too. Its vital to get the geometry giving a good representation as it will help the texturing, if the shape looks natural, i.e. far from perfectly formed - little wrinkles, and stuff really show that its organic, rather han machined.

believe me, I know - i've just had to redo a character I built because her trousers looked to cylinder like in silhouette. Thats the trick I always try to go for - make my object totally black with no hilite and render it against a white background, kinda like an alpha channel; if that reads well, then you are halfway there!

Thanks dude , Yeah I have some work to do on Joe , now looking back at it , especially after Mattrne's suggestions , I'll have an update for him when I'm satisfied with the beasts look, more wrinkles on shirt tubes from tanks to mask , etc .

Mattrne
Dude , seriously , If I was the type of person that was so easily discouraged by criticism , do you think I would post on this site .

To tell you the truth, I probably would have left the beast and joe as they were, and tried to texture them to get the details you are talking about, but your crits have pushed me to find new and different ways to improve my models, so in effect you have forced me to learn what could have taken me months had I not posted .

So thanks ; )

I'll go home tonight and work more on the wrinkles , I'll also refine the hooves and give a bit more definition to the legs .

Thanks for the encouragement .

Thanks for the crit , I agree , I'll be tweaking the Joe model shortly , your sugestion has been added to my list of things to improve .

I'll update more tonight , Ben .

Thats looking nice, especially the texture on his skin, although I would give one (ok two) overall crits;

1) The colours all look a bit too oversaturated, especially the red on his tank and also the yellow of the tshirt.

2) The straps on his chest just look a bit strange - I don't think that texture works, maybe going with a nicely bumped black type material may look better?

Thanks Mattrne,

I'll have a tweak with the saturation tonight , try to tone it down a bit to see how it looks.

The straps were'nt my least favourite part , but I have a cool bump on it already so switching colours might not be too difficult .

As this is my first real go at texturing , I'm sure I'll do a lot of stuff wrong, I'm still even going through and tweaking the model, its amazing how bad a sharp edge can make a textured object look .

I have completed texturing my Chemical Joe character , I realise there are a few areas I can improve on in the texturing , but due to time constraints/ deadlines , I have to draw the line at this .

For my first real go at texturing I am reasonably satisfied with the result .

Pleae comment and crit on what ever you please , especially on the texturing , I will remember the crits when I texture the beast and hopefuly will improve on that task with what I have learnt from this .

Cheers , Ben .
