Object lighting ?

If you're using maya 2008 you have, in the "textures" tab of the mental ray shaders, the mia_light_sruface node.
In order to make a light-emitting object, you must use an mia_material, and plug an mia_light_surface node in the "additional color" attribute, under the "advanced" tab.
The very last condition is to enable Final Gathering for yoour render.
