Okay, I just started mesh editing this week-- yeah yeah I know, I've been living under a rock hey at least I'm getting there right?-- and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do certain things. I've been looking at tutorials quite a bit, in particular the joan of arc one somebody posted in the Modeling forum a few days ago
http://216.239.37.120/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://mr2k.3dvf.com/tutorials/max/tutorials_joan.htm
and I've learned quite a bit, but I've got a couple major stumbling blocks, the main one of which is this... see these pictures from that tutorial? How did they do that?!! How do you go from the first one to the second one? The people who wrote the tutorial are French and their explanation makes NO sense. (heck, they refer to Chamfer as Station Wagon!)
I've been laboriously cutting edges and dragging the new vertexes to the outside corners and welding them... this worked for merging one or two polygons at a time, but with the more complex areas I get all sorts of weird faces sticking out in places they shouldn't, and Meshsmooth makes it look even more screwed up. Help?
