Okay, I just started mesh editing this week-- yeah yeah I know, I've been living under a rock hey at least I'm getting there right?-- and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do certain things. I've been looking at tutorials quite a bit, in particular the joan of arc one somebody posted in the Modeling forum a few days ago

http://216.239.37.120/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://mr2k.3dvf.com/tutorials/max/tutorials_joan.htm

and I've learned quite a bit, but I've got a couple major stumbling blocks, the main one of which is this... see these pictures from that tutorial? How did they do that?!! How do you go from the first one to the second one? The people who wrote the tutorial are French and their explanation makes NO sense. (heck, they refer to Chamfer as Station Wagon!)

I've been laboriously cutting edges and dragging the new vertexes to the outside corners and welding them... this worked for merging one or two polygons at a time, but with the more complex areas I get all sorts of weird faces sticking out in places they shouldn't, and Meshsmooth makes it look even more screwed up. Help?

it'd be nice if I could figure out how to post more than one pic at a time, too...

won't work with eMesh
use ePoly and select the 4 Edges, press Del
and that's it :)

Oho! So they've been trying to fool me! :annoyed: I should have known! You know, it sounds like I should be using Edit Poly instead... but darnit I just sorta kinda figured out this Mesh business now I gotta start over again! Argh! :p

As well as using Editable Poly.... nip over to www.scriptspot.com and d/l Mesh Tools ans CSPolytools, they will make life a lot easier for you. You might want to visit the Mesh tools homepage too cos, if you are just starting, the d/l-able vids will probaly be quite useful to you. :)

Ooooo handy! If I can install it right and get it workin, this should be fun! Cept I can't play the videos for some reason.. bah!

Problem-- I can't figure out how to get Meshtools to work! The readme says 'go to customize user interface, you will find the tools in the 'Meshtools' category'....... WHAT Meshtools category??? I ain't seein one anywhere!

OK .. the vids.. i think they might be Divx (can't remember) If you haven't got DivX installed .. go over to .. (wait for it) wwwdivx.com and sort yourself out.

Follow the intsall instuctions for Mesh Tools and if you have done that go into customise and you should find the Mesh Tool commands in there.

The windows on the left hand side in customise give you catergories, commands , and menus. If you scroll the top window (catergory) to Mesh Tools, then in the window below all their commands should show.

I found it easier to create a menu out of the command first before pasting them over to my default quad.. It's up to you wether you do that .. but you need to either create a new quad or paste those commands over to your default quad. :)

Ah! Thanks for telling me where it was, found it. Never messed with the menus before, but I think I can figure it out from here. Handy spiffiness!

Actualy, U chamfer the vertex in the middle, and then snap the vertices U created on the ones of the borders, weld and U just went from pic 1 to pic 2
