Hello, you must use reverse foot lock. You have a tuto at rigging101.com (http://rigging101.com/).

Hey Chris,

If you can post your post your MAX file on here, I can take a look at it. I don't think you need to completely change to a reverse foot lock just to fix this, I've built plenty of stable legs that don't use it.

I'm with J, post your rig without a mesh and I'm sure that we can find you a solution easy.

Chris,
I took a look at your rig, and noticed some mistakes, so I quickly redid it. The major issue I saw right away was the fact that you scaled your objects. This is a big no-no in rigging because it screws up the math of your objects' matrix.

Just to visualize why scaling is bad, I'll give you an example that Paul gave me. Open up MAX, and make two boxes. Scale one box up in the z axis. Now link the other box to the scaled one. Rotate the box that wasn't scaled. Notice all that skewing it's doing? Imagine if you scaled all your objects in your rig, how much problems it could cause. This is why it is generally a bad idea to scale at an object level.

There are a few ways to get around this. You can scale your object in a sub-object level. Scaling up verts is no different than moving them, so you aren't messing up the matrix. You could also apply an x-form modifier, scale through that, then collapse it down the stack. If for some reason you did have some scaled objects, under the utilities pannel, there's a reset x-form button you can use. In this case, using reset x-form wouldn't work very good since you have a full rig with objects depended on each other.

As for the foot, in the Hi-Solver, under the motion pannel, there's two options for its parent space. Choosing IK-Goal for the ball of the foot's ik will make it stop following the initial bone.

Hope some of this sheds some light on rigging.

Here's the file with the updated rig:

Wow .... this is some really good info Jason . Thanks for all that scaling knowledge. So is it applicable to Maya too .... ie ; not scaling your object model ?? Can we group it to itself and then scale the group so the the scaling transforms affect the group and not the model ??

Here, try this one out.
http://files.filefront.com/valentineRigTempmax/;9443434;/fileinfo.html

You could also change the swivel angle back to its original position if it snaps while chaging the ik goal's parent space.

Gaurav, yes the same concept should apply to all the other 3d packages. Scaling a group would still change the value of the objects' matrix.
