Howdy guys. I've done some hunting and searching and seen a few vague opinions one way or the other for Quadro's versus GeForce cards, but I'd like to pose the question more specifically.

Quadro FX 570 256mb vs. Geforce 8800GTS 320mb
Maya viewport porformance, polygon count

My primary requirement is good solid viewport performance running a really high poly count. Which card might perform better? Plus, I can't help but be shallow here, will either actually make my viewport look better, like cleaner textures, better shadows and lighting, anti aliasing etc?

I'm also thinking of poly count for Mudbox or Zbrush, but that, along with games, is definitely secondary.

In case it makes any difference, here are my PC Specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3R
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad 2.4Ghz @ 3.2Ghz
RAM: 2Gb Corsair XMS2 @ 800Mhz

Thanks muchly :)

the 8800 should run faster. the 570 is a low end quadro card, youll need a midrange to highend quadro card to start to equal or beat the performance of a gaming card like the 8800gts. see geforce and quadro cards arent much different physically, but the quadro has software and drivers that help it work better in 3d programs in some cases. so to really outperform a gaming card youll need a speed equivalent quadro card which is usually at least a $1000-2000 card. also the 8800 will game faster and perform the same speed in most apps its just the quadro is more tested with apps and has less viewport glitches. honestly though vs the 570 the 8800gts should beat it in gaming and in 3d performance and youre getting more bang for your buck.

Nice, thank you so much for a nice clearcut answer, I really do appreciate it :)

I forgot to mention why those 2 cards (for anyone interested in this too). Price is obviously an object, and I think (or hope) I'll have $500nzd to spend. Since there are so many gaming cards out there, and reviews, it was quite easy to pick. the Quadro was easier. Not terribly easy to find Quadro's in NZ and at a good price, so that's $500nzd as well. I'm fairly uneasy about buying hardware from overseas.

One other eency question I forgot, if I happened to hardware render any particles on the odd occasion, am I able to do that adequately on the 'gaming' card? unfortunately right know although I know software rendering well, I know nothing about hardware rendering. I don't plan on doing much, if any at this point, but I would like to keep my options open...
