I want to create a vast field of corn, not paint effects corn but geometry. However, after even 100 stocks it starts to slow to a crawl. What's the best way to create a large field of corn (possibly thousands)? There are going to be a lot of shots so I don't really want to composite piece by piece for each shot.

Thanks

not sure on the escene
but this mgiht work
render out a few nice looking corn groups
then, make image planes
then use the rendered image, with alpha as a clipping to duplicate background ones

it mgiht work great...might look terrible. find a happy balance at least.

OR do to a certain point render, and composite a matte painting to use at a certain depth...not sure it will work tho...

otherwise yer gonna have slow down sorry man... less one of the other maya peeps can give some better advice (which I would like to hear...cause i am gonna be doing th esame sorta thing...possibly)

Thanks,

Yeah, I was thinking of image planes too, but if the camera moves over the field it will be flat and 2D.

here is what I came up with, hopefully it will work, I only did one test but it worked out well, maybe you'll find it useful.

So be able to render out a lot of corn, and still work in the set, we are going to reference patches of corn stalks (about 50 to a patch) that add up to a field.

- Each patch will be represented by a simple referenced poly box. Many of these boxes next to each other will make up the whole field in the set.
- For each particular shot that requires a part of the field, each referenced box in view will be switched in the reference editor with patches of real corn geometry
- Even a few patches of real corn geometry can slow down the dual-proc machines, so before switching the reference to real corn for rendering, make sure your shading mode is set to "bounding box" instead of wireframe.
- The shot is rendered and out comes a field of corn.

Motion:
- For shots that require character interaction with corn, high-detail corn stalks may be imported and animated as needed.

- The effect of wind over the field will be done by rigging every corn stalk and adding random movement to the leaves and stalk.
