View Full Version : displacment question
Ironhalo 01-09-2008, 06:41 PM i'm trying to make a cube of water for a project. i ended up using the maya ocean shader for displacement and mia materials for shading. the top part of the cube is displaced, the rest of the sides arent. my problem is the displaced water breaks apart from the rest of the geometry, leaving gaps. i'd expect this to happen, but i dont know how to get around this. i included an image to beter illustrate what im talking about. any ideas on how to solve this would be very welcome!

Looks like your using extra objects or a nurbs cube
did you tried it with a polygon cube?
Also, I think if your vertex normals are set to hard edges then you'll get splitting. Try selecting the whole object and choose Normals > Soften Edge.

I have a similar problem in my scene...
I need to displace a glass surface with vertical strips around whole surface but here is what I'm getting.
Seems like the models is breaking apart in places where non coplanar faces meet and displacement affects only polygons facing same direction.
I tesselated surface in epproximation editor, tried soften edges but didn't work for me.
Give me a hint what I'm doing wrong, please.
thx

Oops...sorry for this post, I'm new to displacement and didn't know that it requires projection too. :scream:
