View Full Version : Swamp Creature
tonemah 04-25-2003, 01:26 AM What's up everyone? I'm new here. I've been working on a project for a while, and it's still in progress, but I just wanted to get some feedback from people who know what they're talking about. I just got the textures to a point where I felt I could stop. I still need to rig him, and Ive just started the environment. There are still a few areas on the textures that I feel could use some work, but I could keep going for weeks on these textures. Anyway, here are a few pictures. Let me know what you think.

Hello, and a warm welcome to CG Talk
Nice creature you have here! :)
Just a few suggestions from me:
- since he is a swamp creature, perhaps you could pump up the glossiness in his textures a little, make him look slimier and wet :)
- The webbing between his fingers should be a bit translucent. Instead of having those veins in the colour channel as you've done, you could make them much fainter, and then add them to the translucency map - it's a cool effect ;)
Nice details that you have so far in the textures though
It would be nice to see some renders of the entire body, both full front and back :)
Keep going! :D

Aaaah I see you have now posted a full body shot, while I was writing my reply :p
Umm... I do actually have a crit now :)
Some of the shapes that you have used are a little too boxy - like on the chest and the palms of the hands. Try and work those shapes a little, so that they have nicer curvature :)
Also, try and make the model more asymmetrical - it makes it more interesting ;)

here's a wire frame. It's kind of bad.

Thanks for the crits, Leigh. I agree with you about the veins and the boxy geometry. This is actually the first big project I've undertaken. I will do the best that I can to fix these problems. I know that the textures and everything are very symmetrical, and I plan on fixing those. I'm still in school, and I'm having to get things done really fast. I'm extremely excited about being a member of this forum. And when I start doing new projects I will definately be posting.
Thanks again, here's a back view for you.

That alligator skin look you have on the back is cool
Looking forward to seeing how this character evolves :)
Very impressive for your first big project - well done

Well, it's been a few days. I've been meaning to post, but you know, it hasn't happened. Anyway, here's a render of a tree that I'm modeling for the environment.
I see a box btween the root's of the tree :)...
the tree looks good...
tonemah

Yeah, the box is obvious. This tree is still in progress, this was just a test render.

Lookin' good there B.
I'm sportin' wood.
I hope you do as good a job with the textures on the swamp as you did on the alligator dude.

Here's a progress shot. The background is definately not definate.... I'm not really sure what kind of lighting I want to do the scene as. Any suggestions would be helpful. I was thinking kind of a gray day, with a little fog here and there. But, I'm always open to suggestions.

Cool looking creature. I like the environment you're making for it too, although it does look a little strange with that image in the background and no textures on the trees, but obviously you are not done. Anyway, like Leigh said, add some glossiness/wetness to the creature and make it a little less boxy. Also, I like the scales on the back, but I think they might be too tightly packed towards the shoulders. More tightly packed scales means more flexibility in that area, but how much forward and back flexing does this creature's back do up by its shoulders? Then again, he is a water creature and, for all I know, doesn't even have hard bones and is filled with cartilage and muscle. Good work anyway. Keep it up! :)

Well, I've been working on the rig here lately. Haven't really had time to work on anything else. here's the rig. I downloaded it from www.pepeland.com (http://www.pepeland.com) I'm not a rigger, so I need all the help I could get. If anyone needs to download rigs, I highly recommend this site. Here's a progress shot. It's kind of a bad quality post, but hey, what can you do.

Wow, I haven' posted in here in quite a while. I've been having a few problems with the rigging, but here's a render of where I'm at right now. Let me know what you think.
wow looks very nice!
canīt wait for the finished scene!
GO ON!!:buttrock:
Throw some swamp goo hanging' off of him too...that would add alot I think....you know swamp weeds and stuff....Looks good to me.

No, he does not look wet, but I would not worry about that, he seems to be a bit scared of water anyhow.
Besides the bad attempt to humor,..... looks good. Anxious for the rest....

Alright, here's a little work on the lighting and water and such and stuff and things....

Looks like a good idea so far... Try adding some fog, mist etc... Think Star Wars...
tonemah
06-05-2003, 03:50 AM
Yeah, I'm going to definately put some fog in there, and bugs flying around and stuff. I also want some grass, and moss, and vines hanging and the like. If anyone has any good ideas on how to pull some of that off really easy, please share the wealth.
Here is another render. It's not so great.

love the purple tree in the background :D
you gonna be finished with that guy by next quarter?
oh yeah, about the vines and stuff--maybe try opacity maps on planes? That might be easier than using splines everywhere.
can't wait to see this finally finished.

Your texture work is outstanding!
I look forward to more.

I like the render where the camera is behind the character.....bend his back a bit more too...he looks a little stiff to me...great job on the progression of this image...keep going:thumbsup:

Hi tonemah
Good work on this creet! I like the way he is right now, more wet and well textured!!
I also like the way you are setting up your swamp! My only crit is regarding the water maps, u could improve the bump and reflect on water, but this is not so difficult bcuz u've done most of the job already. I'm looking forward to see it finished

So, here we go. I've changed the lighting several times trying to get something I like.... I've changed the water and I think it looks much better now. There's still some work to be done on the pose, textures, and and camera shots. But, here's where I am right now....
