Title: Old Berlin Courtyard
Name: Bertrand Benoit
Country: Germany
Software: Blender
Hi all,
I wanted to take a break from glossy interiors and go to the opposite end of the cleanliness spectrum. This scene is relatively low-poly, as you can tell from the close-up of the car. The displaced ground accounts for about 300 ,000 of the total 500,000 polys. I did most of the textures from photos of an actual Berlin courtyard I took last weekend. The textures for the ground, trees and car are from CGTextures.com, reworked in PShop. The modeling was done in Blender and the render in Indigo 1.0.4.
Comments and criticism much welcome.

Yep. Bizarre. It shows in my gallery though.
I'll just post a few more angles, then.

Nice one.
I like the sunnier one, the second from the link, more.
I like the car, actually the pic was a contribution of mine to cgtextures and is a photo shot by one of my flat mates(he has tons of such stuff, PM me if interested).

Wonderfull job Bertrand !
Too bad for the mapping in the windows. The one with the car is simply gorgeous.

Thanks guys for the kind words.
scrimski: Talk about a coincidence! I was wondering where this car was shot (only beat-up car I could use on CGTextures). So do you mean it's actually from Berlin too! That would be highly appropriate.
(Since you're also from here, I thought I'd mention where I shot these facades for the textures. They're from the courtyard of the Postfuhramt in the Oranienburgerstr. I dispensed with the big octogonal tower as I couldn't get any good shot of it. But I might return some day and reshoot it to "complete" the scene.)

Hi Marc,
Thanks. No, I'm sticking to the day job - it pays better ;-)
This is what I do at night.

but indeed, I am suprised by Indigo...can you tell a bit about rendertimes ..also
for your interior renderings ?

Gorgeously grimy!
Looks like you got a little lazy in the UV mapping around windowsills though, that is the biggest crit.
Also, a little bit more sky detail would make it look real.

Thanks guys.
purerender: Sure it does, Marc! But feel free to make me in offer ;-))))
As for Indigo, I don't mind giving them a little plug - Nick, the developer, really deserves it. I know you guys at Pure use Maxwell when it comes to unbiased renderers, so I'll try to make a comparison based on using the demo. As far as render times are concerned, they are comparable. One difference is that Maxwell (like Fry) uses a special supersampling gimmick that slightly blurs the renders, as you will have noticed. This makes the images appear to render faster because Indigo delivers much crisper results. There are a few noise-reducing algorithms in Violet, Indigo's tonemapping app, that achieve the same thing, though.
In terms of features, one big missing element in Indigo is MP-Displacement. What it has and Maxwell hasn't include 1) an amazing implementation of exit portals, which makes sun-lit interiors clear much faster than Maxwell's. 2) a more sophisticated, though less predictable glare system (which has to be calculated during render times, not in post), 3) support for photometric lights using IES data, which I find a huge plus; 4) extremely accurate dielectrics, which means glass renders fast, beautifully, and with all the required caustics, including those infamous under-water ones.
I like the superb integration with Blender, though that won't be an argument for you. But there's a good Max plugin by Suvakas and a full doc. should land in February.
Pfff. I hope I haven't forgotten anything, but I'm sure I have.
Stuh: You're completely right about that and that was a bad oversight on my part. Somebody else pointed it out and I've since corrected the model. I might post an updated version in the next few days.
xtrm3d: Yes, it's very close to that place.
vkirchner: Yes, here are some wires:

Hi Bertrand,
Nice to see the wire. Hopefully you really managed the low poly parts very well and the textures give to them the required details. I say hopefully because when I see the tarmac part I can imagine that it represents the main part of the poly count. As a Blender user I guess you used the displacement modifier since Indigo does not allow it at render time.
Once again you did a great job and I can't get my eyes out of this car.

Great job on this artistic piece of work, though the board (the one above the car) seems to stand out from the rest of the grunge feeling. Congrats
so cool the texture and the material. world class.

very nice work, i love it. one thing in day shot the back building looks not that good imo. the details are not pronaunced enoths, bricks and stuff.... but definately i can get a berlins wibe :)
u can chek out my works which are berlins inspiared (even though descriptions doesnt state that) at : http://isnm.de/~talmant/works.html
by the way where in berlin your court yard is? i could chek how closely u modeled it :) sins curiently i live in berlin :)

Thanks to all!
Enrico: Thanks. You were the first to point out the stretched UV-mapping on the windowsill and I've now corrected that. Maybe I'll post updates later. The scene has 459,000 polys with the displaced tarmac and 61,000 polys without it. So yes, it's a very low-poly scene. If Indigo could do micro-poly displacement at render times, I could add a lot more details to this scene and it would also leave me a lot more memory room for better textures. And yes, I used Blender's displacement modifier. I've made a few experiments with it in the past, one of which you can see here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=30627&d=1197629116
Maantas: A lot of interesting stuff on your site. I see the Berlin inspiration. The two buildings in my image were modelled after buildings in the courtyard of the Postfuhramt on Oranienburgerstr., though the topology of the courtyard itself is very different. Perhaps I'll try to model the full scene one day. That'd be a challenge!

Hello Bertrand.
Very impressive close up.very good work on textures.
kEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
i just checked out your website.pretty stunning renderings....
i guess i have seen some of your renders on Expose?!The pretty purple color look familiar.i guess its your signature.
Also i have seen some of your renders in another websites, maybe you were working with them as a freelancer?!
I am going to check out Indigo!!How come i have never heard of it!

Great work! I tend to like the dusk one. I like the way the artificial lighting enhances the pools of water on that one.

MaryamNademi: HI Maryam. Thanks for your words. Glad you liked the website. It's very flattering but no, I doubt you've seen my images in Expose. You may have seen some images on websites, though, but I generally sell my images as stock so I rarely find out how people use them so I wouldn't necessarily know. Yes you should check out Indigo - it's a wonderful piece of software.
maantas: It's the Oranienburgerstr. in Mitte, not Oranienstr. in Kreuzberg (though Kzbrg is even more run-down!). Several people have pointed out my UV sloppiness. I've corrected the model but I'm travelling this w-e so haven't had time to do another render. I'll post a corrected version soon.
e-brink, squarepixelstudio, archlancer, Eomer41: Thanks a lot for your support guys.
