Hi :D

I have been working with architectural renders for a little time now, but i Have never done a character before so this is my first one. I guess i was motivated to do it since i start looking around in the forum, there is so much good work here and you can feel sach a good environment...

Thatīs why iīm here and i hope you will help me with the lots of problems (i allready know) iīm going to have.

So here is rudolph.

hope you like it, i have started it 2 days ago, itīs made with surface modifier in Max 5.

Hey man, i like that charactor as 2D, the 3D version looks as though the ears need more shape to them. They seem a little flat.

The nose could use some more curves on him, liven it up a little, more like the 2d-version.

I love the charactor! Will you be animating later?

Yeah, thank you very much for your up thumbs, and yeah you are right about those ears, they were too flat, i think i have it better now, but mostly iīv been working on his hands.

So let me think what you think people.

Oh, ... yeah Iīll definetly animate him, (if i can).

But firt i have to finish the model and then (the part iīm more afraid of) texture it. Then i hope iĻll animate him, since i allready have planed the story... and YES itīs funny:D

Nice job. I think it's a fairly original concept for a mouse character. I like it.

Maybe he'd look better with more prominent teeth.

Nice Character! Its looking good :applause:

C&C:
:wip:

1. He doesnt have a tail, give him one he is a mouse after all!
2. He doesnt have a belly button (give him one if you want to personify him a bit more)
3. Possibly put some more wrinkles on the top of his nose

Thats all i can think of at the moment keep up the good work!

Hey, I think i figured it out, in the 2d image he looks meen (the eye brow area's) in the 3d image he looks like he is happy.

maybe a happy mediam would be good.

Yes, you are right with that, itīs because iīve been drawing since i was 4, and iīve been modeling since... last few days, so yes itīs much harder to me, try to give him a desired espresion, but i gess thas where the fun is, so i promisse iīll keep traing :banghead:

About the tail and belly button, yes itīs in the drawned character, is just that i havenīt do it yet.

Well, iīve been out all day, so letīs work a litle and i hope i can show you somthing in a couple of hours.

BTW, if somebody can give me an advice on how to texture him, thanx, i have the texporter plug in, but you have to detach areas of the face and then you get a very defined line in the texture where you detached, do i have to blend all the parts with another drawn mask?
:insane:

Well, is this is a model that will be hi-res. If so, then there are many methods you can use.

For detailed tutorials: .http://www.3dtotal.com --Click on Free Stuff, tutorials.

I would recommend using the unwrap method, its harder to learn, but it can be used with anything. Including game models.

Thank you for all your coments and advise, tcomputerchip

I tink basically itīs modeled now, I started the rigging part but had some troubble, nothing that canīt fix tomorrow, but for now it will remain in the same pose.

Iīm gona give it a try with the unwrap, y know i have made a tut once but donīt remember well.

:wise: going to sleep now

Well, itīs almost rigged, except for some troubles with his crouch area, but anyway, this little fellaw is more wise than i though, i left the desktop for a minute and he was traing to steal me somo cheese :p

Nevermind, i just have to start texturing, and iīm a little afraid.

Could you post some wires?
Good work

Here you have, BTW since itīs my first model, i wuould apreciate very much your opinions on how i did it, because i donīt know what is a "clean mesh" as you used to say, and whats about the triangles and poligons, is it better to have only 4 sided polys? why? Do you think the mesh could handle an animation or does it need more detail in the areas where it flex? (asking this because i had some trouble in the crouch area, and donīt know if itīs my poor skining expertise or just a bad mesh?

You could make the fingers look more cartoony, like on your 2D picture

octopus77
04-30-2003, 07:28 PM
Well after a few problems:banghead: ;

Think iīm starting to enjoy the unwrap texturing method, my biggest problem right now are those F#*@$ngs beams i canīt control, because i had to split the head into two materials due to his prominent nose.
But what the hell, itīs just for fun.

BTW the textures were made in a few minutes, what i wanted was to learn the method so i didīn give much importance to the actual textures, but i think i like that elefant like skin.

Some more texures to go

Hey, good work so far. Like I said before, the 2d expression is not the same. Not sure if you want to go with the angry look for 3d. If you do, let me know, i can help and transforming the expression a little so its more like you 2d image.

As for the texture on him, i think it has too much bump mapping and not enough discoloration. Maybe a little less space between the cracks in the skin would help as well.

Good work so far! :applause:  :applause:

Hey Tcomputerchip, thanx for the constance, iīll try with your suggestions, hadnīt seen your post till now, but i think i have allready do some of your coments.
About the expresion ,well i wish to animate him, so iīll have to do some blend shapes, thatīs why i think for now the expresion should be as neutral as posible, but i will need those tips for that moment.
Well the textures are all mepped, there are a lot of problems still, but at least they are all there.

I think a slight bit more contrast between the light and dark area would really make him come alive.

This is cartoon type of charactor, so maybe try other colors for the skin, not sure how well it would look. But I still beleave a better contrast for the belly to the skin areas would make it look really cool. Maybe a more pinkish color if you want to stick with the current colors you have.

:bounce: :bounce:

Hello again people; i started to work on his environment, i needed to see him in his home.

That will be the principal set of his animation.

sorry about the crapy cuality of the image, is just that my web host doesnīt let me to have more than one page, or none hotlink.
I know it sucks:annoyed:

He's looking good, can't wait for animation time!

Keep it up...

Oh, what program/s are you using. And are you using a Render System, if so, what?

He's looking good, can't wait for animation time!

Well, i gess you will have to wait a litle, or more, because i havenīt done any animation yet (i mean in my life), of a character, just a couple of tuts, besides iīm just starting a job that will keep me busy for a couple of weeks, at least.
But, hey stop excusing miself, iīll try to managge my time to post some updates "eitherway" (is that a word).

Abaut the soft, iīm using Max 5, with native render, (i wish i have money to buy BRAZIL), and no radiosity in this case.
