Has anyone tried this?

mental ray for Maya can make some nice GI interior lighting features, but only comes with a 1 cpu render license. Liquid is an open source translator from Maya to Renderman. Aqsis is an open source Renderman compliant renderer.

Is it possible to do initial GI calculations (for a stationary interior lighting shot) in mental ray, bake the calculations into the textures, use Liquid to create .rib files, and render on an Aqsis render farm? This would be a nice, powerful, and inexpensive way to use both systems.

Probably yes, though you would have to overcome lots of problems. Aqsis could use the textures without problems, at least if you provide accurate texturing coordinates ( on polygons etc as the defaults probably differ ). Then you would need to write some shaders using the baked textures, this shouldn't be no big problem... as long as you have access to the shader source.

Renderfarm with Aqsis... currently you need a renderfarm controller...

BUT: Visit the offical Aqsis forums where you'll get help faster...

Many places working on film use a similar method called Ambient Occlusion. They bake it into the textures(or the normals) with MR or Prman 11 and then they dont have to use long raytrace times for the final renders(since most people use motion blur that slows down most raytracers like MR by 10-20x)
