Title: Render - Equestrian Portrait of Louis XIV - Giovanni Bernini
Name: Stanislaw Marek
Country: Poland
Software: 3ds max
Hi all,
This is the copy of great statue Equestrian Portrait of Louis XIV - oryginally perfected sculpted by Giovanni Bernini for Wersal
-Ofc zbrush 3.1 was necacary
zbrush3.1 for modeling - used subtools (22pieces) - generated displace maps for rendering(by regions..with bitmap pager turned on) in Vray with 3dsmax. Tetxures used by materials from cgtextures.com volume light and bacground are rendered to elements and composed later.
Thanks to Pawel Szenszol and Marcin Solarz who help me with hardware support and to Pawel Hynek for vray consults and Jerome Lebrun for model task!

Wow great, although his torso seems a bit too small to me, but I could be mistaken as I am no anatomy expert (of the male body that is :D). Great job!

Very impressive modeling! I'd love to see a turntable of it.
One thing I think could help is if you increased the contrast of the final render a little bit in photoshop.
Make those darks a little deeper to really make the form pop.
Keep up the great work!

Nice work!
Plugged.

Great work, my only crit goes to the horse's tail which doesn't plug correctly into the rest of the body. I'd say it should start much higher, at the end of the spine.
check an example here :

Correct, but you should probably say that to Bernini instead:

The modeling is good, though you've simplified the details quite a bit from the original, but whether that was a technical decision I don't know. As as a pure portrait of horse or man, it's not totally accurate.
Using vray for this type of render was a mistake I think, it doesn't look realistic and the sunrays look very fake, and also I don't think the choice of light direction was the best to show off the model.

I'm not so sure this deserves to be awarded a trophy, it looks a tad clunky. Yes, a ton of complicated modelling going on here, yet it lacks the finesse of the original sculpture. Bernini sculpted with limestone not marble, I don't feel marble is the right texture for the piece. The sunrays look cheap.

First. Excellent work. Two thumbs up.
Second. I don't get all the "extra" comments some people make, especially for a WORK like this.
Maybe ,"the head", "torso too small" etc.
Have you guys seen the original? The real statue? At least google it.
The model is suppose to be a 1:1 copy of an existing sculpture. Check the original out and then make related comments. It is suppose to look like it does. The modeling is 1:1. And as always, a little bit of artistic touch is welcomed.
No hard feelings.
Greets.

Perfect as always :bounce:. You are the modern "Digital Bernini".
Did you only use reference photos ?
Could you post some steps (low poly and Zbrush) please ?

Just perfect.
As a constructive criticism, maybe the hooves lacked detail and overall "sharpness". I'm not really sure.
Could we see the wires? Is it on some other thread?
I believe you might have the lower res cage still (the higher is really unimportant for study, I believe).
EDIT: Actually, did you document the process?
Thank you for allowing us to see this beautiful work.

hi all,
i did from pictures refferences only (shame.. i want to see statue in the future for real : ) )
in first i did very lowpoly model - only for finding all propotions. It was most important step.
I had to compare it with many pictures from many sides ( photos wasnt professional so it was truly hard.. to compare perspective, distance, and roll... to every photo..)
when the result was not bad i did medium poly model - every part was diferent element for example : tail, horse, helmet, chest and head ect..
then i could easly subdive each element(subtool) to milions polys and make lot of details.
few steps on screens:

Hey!
Beautifully done,
This is more of a question for me...
Could the marble base use more specular? i mean it kinda looks like it could be a bit more
light reflective.
I really don't know though, this is my first post at anything. :P

That is great work. Here is just an interesting fact to bore you, but with a horseback statue, there is a significance of the position of the horse's legs. If both front legs are in the air, as in your example, it means the person died in battle. If the horse has just one front leg in the air it means the person died after the battle from their wounds. If the horse has all 4 legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes. I'm full of shhhh - useless information! :)
I would love to see this placed within a larger setting, hugh marble decor building too :D

Amazing! Beautiful! Outstanding work! Not only the 3d sculpture but also your incredible patience and the detailed hard work you put into it; it shows in every pixel of these renders.
I want to see more of these. I enjoyed so much that it goes from my eye right to my soul. It makes me feel so good viewing such 3d works like this!
Thank you for that!
