View Full Version : Make rocks with using bump maps
specialk12 01-09-2008, 03:00 AM how do I use a alpha map for this image. I want to separate the rocks as white and in between rocks as black. Or the oppisite color. I tried using the channels pallette, but that didnt seem to work out. Are there any suggestions on how I can do it.
I have 3ds max and want to use this map as a BUMP texture. I want the in between to be black and the rocks to be white so that when I put it into my bump map slot all the rocks will stick out.
you know what I mean.
Any suggestions cause I already ran out of them. I tried everything I know

You’ll have to separate the stone from the mortar manually for the best result in this case. The color and value of the mortar is not different enough from the stone to be able to separate it out successfully with channels or any other procedural selection means. The Magic Wand Tool will grab a certain amount of the mortar, though with sloppy results.
Paint the mortar area in black on a separate layer. Add a white filled layer under the mortar layer and adjust opacity of both for texture detail. Grayscale the image.

an alpha map is not really what you need...
what you need is a bump/displacement map from your color image...
give this a shot...
