View Full Version : Layers of alpha textures causing slow down

We are rendering a scene which has strips of polygons which wind around in a complex pattern. The strips of polygons all wind around a glass object. All the strips have textures with alpha channels. When we try to render the scene, Mental Ray slows right down as it tries to sort through all the layers of alpha channels. Ironically the Maya window shows the alpha channels without any difficulty as you would expect. It seems to be the sorting that's causing the problem, but we don't need the sorting to be accurate for the strips of polygons because the texture is a white glow which wouldn't look any different even if it were sorted incorrectly.

Is there a setting which can simplify the alpha sorting in order to make it render faster?

I work with games and in a game engine we would stop the texture writing to the Z buffer which alows alpha textures to overlap with only a few errors.
