View Full Version : Eyes move when they shouldn't in Maya rig

Hi, I'm more of a beginner as far as rigging goes and I'm lost. I've read several tutorials and threads, and tried everything to try and get my simple character's eye controls to work properly. Here's how I set it up. I aim constrain the controls to the eyes. Bind the eyes and rest of geometry to skeleton because I want the eyes to move with the head. Then move my root joint into the main mover in the Hypergraph, making it a child of the main mover. Everything works fine until I move the "Mainmover" and the eyes move and become displaced/detached from the character. It seems the constrain and the skeleton or the attached skin, affect each other. I think there's an easy fix? I would appreciate a whole lot if someone could explain how to fix this and maybe take a look at my character file or point me in the right direction. I'm in maya 8.5, but it's a .ma, so that shouldn't really be a problem.

try detaching the eyes and just parent it to the skeleton

Hmmm. Thanks for the reply. I thought it might work, but it only made my whole head aim constrained to my eye control, so that the whole head along with the eyes rotates. I'll have to take a look at more tutorials because this method doesn't seem to be right.

I've seemed to figure out my problem. I made the head, with eyes, children to a new control curve and made that a child of the rootjoint then binded the skin to the geometry without binding the head. Everything seems to be working out fine. Thanks for anyone who took a look.

You need to get into the habit of freezing transformations on things before skinning and setting up constraints.

Ah. Yeah I know. Thanks. :)
I haven't rigged a real character in maya other than provided models, and surely the skeleton could use foot-work and such, but I was just trying to get a simple character going to mess around with. I definitely know I missed a couple freezes, and I'm sure that file is pretty bad because I was frantically messing around trying different things to fix my problems.
