Lesson learned last time. Just jump into it and don't get "too" carried away in the planning stage or you'll just overlook the entire process by having these complex ideas. The best submissions of last year weren't particularly the most original characters, but they were of good quality and the bottom line is they finished. :)

Wow this is really amazing! I was very briefly introduced to the Dominance War competition my last semester in art school, but I had no idea it was THIS awesome! I've been out of school for only a few weeks now and the stuff I've been learning and discovering on my own is just fantastic! Is it possible for anyone who wants too to enter? Or do you have to already be at a certain skill level to qualify to represent cgsociety? I would love to give this thing my best shot!

Is it possible for anyone who wants too to enter? Or do you have to already be at a certain skill level to qualify to represent cgsociety?Assuming the same structure as last year, it's an open contest. Sign up under the banner of whichever site you want to represent, start a thread in the site's contest forum (once the forum is created), and have at it!

There's no skill level requirement... learning and support is a lot of what the contest is about. Even if you don't win, or even complete an entry, you gain knowledge and experience, and get to collaborate with and help out others.

It's a lot of fun... hope to see you there!

a few DW newbie questions

would it be reasonable to presume that the polycount would be higher for this years war? seeing as the current gen consoles are well set in and everything and polycounts are rising in games all the time these days.

when the model is finished does there have to be any explanation of its functionality (features it would have 'in-game' etc) or is just the image good enough?

I've seen the words 'winning pose' thrown around abit. Does this simply mean the best pose for your model or a pose of the character 'winning' so to speak (ie standing over a fallen enemy or something)?

it'll be interesting to see how I go...I've never done game art before in my life, never successfully normal mapped anything....or really done proper textures before.....but i do have a pretty awesome idea sitting in the back of my mind...i just hope the theme will be kind and let me use it.

I was thinking about entering this contest, I never heard of it until recently. So I don't know all the rules, but from what I remember reading...

I don't think they'll increase the polycount, but we won't know until they release more info.

I think an image is good enough, but you can elaborate if you wish.

The final image must have the character in an original interesting pose, and I think on a stand/pedestal. I don't know what "winning pose" exactly means because if you look at the poses from the last competition they don't look like "victory" poses.

If I am going to enter I need to practice creating game characters, never having created one before....

I'm thinking about going 2d only this year because my 3d skills are really subpar and I havn't touched a 3d program since last years entry. Though I downloaded blender I might give it a shot in learning that program while working on this, that'd be pretty fun I think.

A few quick questions...

If you participated in DWII, do you use the same account to register/post entries for DWIII?

Can you enter both the 3D and concept art categories, or does it have to be one or the other?

Can the concept art you use to create your 3D work be submitted for the Concept Art Category? If so, is a separate registration required for the Concept Art category, or does it all fall under a single registered account?

Apologies if any of this has already been asked, and thanks in advance for the info.

If I had learned about Dominance War back in its first or second iteration I may have had enough confidence to join as, at the time, I was fairly up to date with common game modeling techniques... but with the growing popularity of normal mapping and other advanced texturing techniques I think it would take an absolute miracle to win... but still, I'm intrigued. Once there's more information perhaps I'll find the courage to join up. If only there was a category for environment design. Good luck to all of you who are entering for certain, there is some amazing talent already comitting.
