Hi guys and girls :bounce:

I'm Kristina from the Lower Rhine, and I'm currently practicing like crazy so I thought about sharing my stuff here, too. Lately, I've made many digital speedpaints with a set time limit as well as pencil sketches. :)

I painted those in December, using Photoshop 7 and my wacom tablet.

Welcome, Kristina!

Always good to see new people in here, especially girls, haha. Just kidding.
I like the colors in these speedies, though they're all pretty monochromatic. Is that intentional? And what's the limit you've set for yourself?

Maidith

razz, thank you :) I tried different color schemes in each, just to see what I can do within that color scheme. To improve my handling of colors is also one of my goals. The time limit for each of those speedpaints was 1 hour.

Very nice style to the faces that you've done here. That 1hr speed paint "Cesare" is very cool. Maybe a little bit more of study on hands would be good, you're capturing the form well enough to say 'hands', but they don't evoke the same depth of emotion that the faces do.

You've got very clean, efficent and readable pencil work there. Hardly an unnecessary line and very crisp... nice :)

Good stuff, the practicing like crazy is definitely worth it.

Some beautiful pieces here, Kristina. I find the colors schemes your using very captivating, and I'm impressed you're able to accomplish so much in such short painting sessions. Do you do any longer pieces (and if so, will we get to see them at some point)?

Hi there Maidith,

Great to have you here! I love the colors in your work, they're beautiful. :) I need to do more color studies like these.

My crit is mainly on the form, which I'm not sure is reading realistically yet. I think you'd do a bang up job in the Workshop (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=578369&page=1&pp=15), hope you'll participate in that! Maybe focus on an untextured render, and just focus on the form. Your work down the road will only be that much stronger for it.

Looking forward to updates! :)

Maidith
01-11-2008, 07:02 PM
Thank you Rebecca! :bounce: Form is still my major problem so I draw many master studies. (Hopefully I'll have some life drawing classes when I hopefully turn into an art student this year , after graduation :hmm: )
The workshop idea sounds great, I'll join this one :)

Wow, the Eleonora piece is great! The colours and the expression really grab your attention. I think that one especially would really be worth taking to a more finished stage.

Yeah, join the workshop and we can work on form together.

More great paintings, Maidith. I know it's asking a lot, but I'd love to have you break down one of your paintings and technique a bit, even just in terms of basics like canavs size you generally work with, tools you prefer to use, techniques (especially for smooth shading), whether or not you use reference, grids, etc. Only if you have the time/inclination, of course.

Either way, I'll be checking back

Thank you, fifty3dragons and anandpg! :) I appreciate it very much.
My technique is pretty much the same for all those speedpaints, even when I try something different.
I always start with a colored canvas. The color of the canvas will be one that dominates the picture's color scheme or contrasts with it (both can yield nice results). My speedpaints are about 1000-2000px wide in original size; my finished paintings are bigger (2000-3000px wide). On that canvas, I make a quite exact line drawing, partly from reference photos and partly freehand; I try to get proportions and anatomy as correct as possible. In my speedpaints I use reference mostly for the faces while doing the line drawing because it's best to get everything correct at that early stage already so you can focus on other things like light and color.
On a new layer, I block in all colors, light and shadow. Often I work "from dark to light" meaning in the early stages everything is still low contrast, soft and fuzzy looking; similar to here: http://tutorials.epilogue.net/tutorials/from-dark-to-light-a-digital-painting-method .
To achieve smooth blending, I paint with a low flow setting of my brush in Photoshop. For smooth blending it is also extremely helpful to use more than just two colors. You also have to paint the third "in-between" color (at least). Linda Bergkvist has a nice tutorial about this: http://www.furiae.com/images/blending-thoughts.jpg
As for brushes, I use mainly four: a) common hard edged round, b) spackled brush, c) soft airbrush, d) marker with pen pressure set to size only (for small details). They are contained in my main brush set, along with lots of fancy texture brushes I use less often. You can download my brushes here: http://www.mydrive.ch/de/download.php?id=1278314
Don't hesistate to ask if you've got more specific questions, I'll be happy to help :)

Hi everyone :)

I've now made a speedpaint video, painting this:

The video is about 45 minutes long, split in two parts of zipped .avi-files. I apologize for the bad video quality. (at least you can see what I'm doing xD) My computer is slow and I had to paint using only 16bit colors so it wouldn't lag too badly.

Hi Maidith,

It's great to see you posting here, I think your work has great potential and I love your color sense. :)

Because your work is strong I think you can stand to hear a bit of critique, which is mainly that I think the forms are lacking corners / depth which I think once you add in, will give your figures a lot more structure and punch. This (http://www.rebeccakimmel.com/gallery/albums/Traditional-Drawings/Demo-0007.jpg) drawing illustrates a little of what I mean, but the best resource is to look at master drawings by Renaissance artists and in particular, to look at Renaissance and Baroque period sculpture. Corners are just where the form starts to turn away from the viewer or the light source, I think once you add those in your work will be great. :)

Cheers!

Maidith
01-19-2008, 01:03 PM
Hi Rebecca, thanks a lot for the input :) I'm not sure if I grasped 100% of what those "corners" are, but I tried it anyways. Do you mean lines appearing thicker where they meet or cross other lines - or lines in shadow areas?
Anyways, it's been working fine for me here :D

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k169/herzknochen/artsystuff/call_of_heaven1h30min.jpg

A friend (algenpfleger) suggested that I try using "binary lines". So I drew a few studies using pen and ink :) Just looking for beauty of line so they aren't very expressive. But I managed to copy the figures straight with the pen, without preliminary pencil drawings xD *is proud* Somewhen I'll try something different with pens.

Given how long it has taken me thats actually reassuring ;)

In learning ZB there was a harsh period to begin where the interface was very unnatural. Getting past that took awhile, but it suddenly clicked and is to the point I accidently use ZB style shortcuts in other programs at times. If you're coming to it without a lot of classic 3d program habits it might go quicker. If you take a look at some of the video tutorials out there it might help as well (Zack Petrocs are great, and there are a bunch of quality free ones as well).

Nice job on the last speed paint. The head seems a little small vertically (eyes are about 3/4 up), and the lighting on the neck could be clarified to give more shape. Excellent palette, expressive brushwork, interesting body position :)

Keep at it.

Glad to see you getting into Z BRUSH also... ...I think that you should ...NOT... use the sub devide at first,...but rather take advantage of those GREAT FACETS that are created in the undevided sculpture, by creating all of the underlying facial, skull, and neck planes first using those facets, which create the edges which are what Rebecca mentioned to you earlier, and are lacking in your works at the moment...those edges are what create the illussion of DEMENSION, whether it be 2D, or 3D...Master those EDGES/PLANES, and I think you will be on the path to creating some really fantastic works...:)
Think of it as cutting a diamond,..you start out by roughing in the cuts/facets FIRST,...then at the VERY END, you polish/sub devide.
A GREAT book that will really help you out at this point with those edges/planes, is,....DRAWING THE HUMAN HEAD by BURNE HOGARTH.
ALSO...DYNAMIC ANATOMY, and DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING by BURNE HOGARTH, are two other books that will really help you out alot with understanding those EDGES/PLANES, and how they create a solid realistic looking form.
I hope that helps some,...I think your work will really be great when you understand and master those edges/planes....:)
Working in 3D, with Z BRUSH, is going to force you to see in terms of edges/planes..there will be no getting around it/them..:scream:
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING MORE OF YOUR WORK, AND PROGRESS..

kary, thanks for the tips on Zbrush. I haven't read any tutorials yet, gotta do that soon, ere my trial version runs out :)
Again, thank you, and I'll definitely keep at it.
Vilhelmina, thank you
SpiritDreamer, wow, again some very interesting advice! Thank you so much. Oh, "sub divide" is the name of that feature that will model a face's other half for you while you model te one half? xD I've been wondering where that one is. Anyways, you're right about edges and planes. Improvement is slow, I'm trying my best :) And I have those Hogarth books too.

Hi...Kristina..:)

I am not the one that should be giving advice to anyone on the funtions of the Z BRUSH program..still learning it myself..:) ..but..:scream:
The thing that duplicates the other half of the face while you are working on one half of the face, ..is called SYMITRY..Just press Z on your keyboad to get in and out of it..I quit using it myself, just because in real life, no two sides are identical, especealally when movement occures..even on the face.
The thing I was talking about was ..SUB DIVIDE....Which is in the Geomitry section..on the right of screen menues...LOOKS like your head has been subdived 3 times....What I was saying, is to leave the head undived at first..0 sub divide, until you get the edges/planes well established first...This will make the job of sculpting easier for you.
Doing it that way, 0 sub divide is basically just like BLOCKING IN a drawing/painting first, before refinement of features...Hope I am not confusing you here, with words...If you take a peek in my sketchbook thread, last few pages, ..there is a two figure man and woman composition that i'm working on..Go back to where it started, and you can see the princable at work that i'm trying to explain with words.
In your BRUSHES menu...cilick that little thing way up in the top left..will put all of your brushes over to the right of your canvas/screen....The INFLATE brush is good for doing muscles...also the CLAY, and... CLAY TUBES which is what i'm using for those two figures at the moment IS A GREAT BRUSH for sculting/creating muscle ..and the SMOOTH BRUSH then can be used after the muscles are blocked in using the CLAY TUBES BRUSH...Don't have to sub divide that way, to get a sculpted face/figure.
Anyway, just trying to be of some help to you...That program can be very intimidating at first, but it is purely magical none the less, and is for sure worth exploring, experimenting with, and just plane having fun with.:)
Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with while using it.....:)
Nice curls on that hair by the way of the last painting that you posted..

The author (who is an awesome painter) shows the progress of a figure drawing from life and advises to start the drawing by "enveloping" the figure in a simple shape consisting of lines and corners. He says "You'll save time if you learn to do so"; me thinks "o really"?, and tries it. It works quite well. I'll get accustomed to it either way :D It can only be good to try something.

hi! i like how you painted hamlets lips and eyes! theyre really alive-looking, did u use any reference for them?
u know, if u hadnt written hamlet over it i would have thought it was a girl looking at me. (or maybe its supposed to be like that . dont know the story)
your colored pieces look much better than your linework, so u might want to work on that.
if i were u id try to get the lines more fluid and make longer lines.
also, u could work more on your anatomy. for example, i didnt see any collarbones on your pics. im sure youd benefit a lot from it.

Wow, some great updates here Maidith, and I really love your color sense. :)

One thing I think could make your paintings stronger is to have more depth and volume to the faces. I can't help but feel that the eyes don't feel as though they are sitting inside of eye sockets, but feel more like they are floating on the surface. Check out Renaissance master work (http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/5/52/240px-Raphael.woman.600pix.jpg) and note the depth that is created in the eyes. Actually I think you'd really enjoy checking out the work of Raphael in general.

I love your drawings and think they have something unique about them. A very nice delicacy of touch, I really enjoy looking at them.

Cheers and keep up the good work. :)

Hey Maidith, you're welcome, :) it's motivating to see your updates. You know, I would love to see you tackle one of the previous OFDW / mastercopies, I think you could produce some outstanding work. Hey Kristina!!... great work with colors, needless to say!!:applause:
One thing I noticed about your portraits is that the facial features tend to "float" about... in other words, they end up slightly out of place.. I guess it happens with all artists and the age-old solution has been to frequently hold a mirror in front of the canvas so as to see it horizontally flipped.. quite easily done when you are working digitally... hehe.!.. this basically forces you to see your work with fresh eyes, and "shocks" your eye into noticing all the minor constructional defects that you get used to and accept as right after having looked at the same thing for a long time. Hope this trick works for you!.. Keep up the good work!!

Had I measured everything by eye only, it'd haven taken me more time and frustration to make an accurate drawing. Hi Maidith, watch your proportions, I think you have a tendency to elongate the torsos and in some cases the faces, which can be okay so long as it looks intentional. Also I might recommend thinking more about the center line of the body and making sure that key landmarks, such as the center line of the face, neck, pit of neck, base of sternum, navel, and crotch all line up properly along it. I think in the Premonition piece the body becomes too ambiguous and you lose its sense of a centerline.

Definitely good to see your variety and experimentation, would love to see you focus on a few key pieces and really work out the value and color relationships to a greater degree. Maybe come up with a figurative composition that you invest more time in. Love the drawings, I think those are really a strong suit. Still would like to see more depth to the eyes. :)

TheMiyamotoMusashi, thanks :) The book is called "Die Gestalt des Menschen" and as far as I know, only available in German. I borrow it from the local library. However, amazon.com has stocked it too:
http://www.amazon.com/Die-Gestalt-Menschen-Gottfried-Bammes/dp/3332016539/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207571635&sr=8-2
There is also an English book on Bammes there, but it's thinner (only 144 pages, a third of the german book)
I don't know whether it's available in Japan, but I think you can order from amazon.com :)

Some wee life drawing. I went to a life drawing class with my host sister where they needed some (unpaid) models really bad. So we both modeled there (dressed) and in exchange for that we could draw a lot there as well.

And I almost fainted during modeling. Bad circulation. That was embarassing x]

Anand - I'm just as weird as guys who draw women with large boobs. xD

NR43 - that was not my intention, haha xD

Today I started the day with some wannabe calligraphy because it's a) lots of fun, b) difficult and c) I still have so much Japanese paper around here that needs to be used up.

(that's the name of my favorite mangaka. the calligraphy is pretty much fail because the kanjis' proportions are a mess)

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k169/herzknochen/studien/cal4.jpg
The above two are old poems.

Drawn after an ukiyo-e painting, using a copic marker (brush nib).
I TOTALLY dig ukiyo-e, and I think it's even great for practicing because it forces you to exactly think about where you place what line and errors won't be forgiven, plus you need to maintain a flowy and elegant line quality. It's not as easy as it looks.

And another boy:

Hey, at least the men I paint do look like men, hm?

And if you don't like pikachu: some wee-wee (http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/9576/hottie3ir4.jpg)

WOW!! That calligraphy is pretty impressive!:buttrock: If possible, can you post a picture of the kind of equipment you use for it? The copy from woodcut is beautiful! Do you do any pencilling before you start with the ink? ..or is it not allowed?

Alice, grazie :)

Sheeba, vielen Dank ^^

Anand, thank you :) I'll try taking a picture, but the equipment is nothing really fancy :D just Japanese paper, black ink in a small bottle, and a japanese brush :)

Sycen, thank you :D

wickedsamara, thanks  yeah, Bridgman totally rocks :D

Here is a new WIP.

I REALLY, REALLY need to improve because I feel I've producing only mediocre stuff in my entire life. Thus: painting a new painting.

This one will be called "Lullaby in Times of War", and I'll steal a lot from Bouguereau here, learning from him :D

Thank you Del and Preethi :)

Here's the painting. I'm not sure about the level of finished-ness (I guess it could use more refining here and there), but I'm done working on it.

Studies after Anthony Ryder's figure drawing book, because of the lack of life drawing classes.

Hi Kristina! "Lullaby in Times of War" turned out really cool:thumbsup:, but the color scheme seems a bit tranquil for the theme. You could probably increase the over-all saturation and slide the color-range a bit towards the warmer side for a more dramatic effect.. just a thought. Great work with the self portrait and the studies!

I'll give this a try, Anand :) Thank you. I hadn't thought of this before.

Now... I want to make a new painting. This one really has to kick ass, otherwise I'll jump into the Rhine with a block of concrete tied to my feet. Erm... well, it has to become good. xD
Color scheme idea:

This one actually isn't finished. It should have taken longer, but our model sudpdenly cancelled... so we all sat there with half finished drawings! but next week we'll make sure to have a model who'll really stay with us for 2 weeks (its supposed to be a 2 week pose)
