View Full Version : What Canvas Size and Resolution Do You Use?
Greenham 01-06-2008, 01:42 AM Hey all,
I was wondering if there was some sort of industrial standard or even just personal preference when it came to image size and resolution of your work. I'm running with Photoshop and I was wondering what I should set it on.
Thanks,
Greenham.

I just think about what possible output needs I might have with this piece, and then pick the highest resolution I'd ever need to print the piece at. For example, the highest for typical personal pieces is roughly the front cover of a magazine, because that's what my personal works usually end up on. So, the dimensions of a magazine, at 300 DPI is what I would use. For clients, depending on what purpose, can vary greatly.

Pretty much whatever the final printed size will be, at 300 DPI. Whether a book cover, magazine cover, DVD cover, CD cover, whatever. My most common render size, working in Max, is 1838 by 2775 saved as a 300 dpi tiff. The client may also have specific sizes, formats and dpi and file types for you to follow.

Thanks for the replies. 300 DPI seems to be serving me well for the most part.
You wouldn't happen to have rough dimensions on what a magazine cover is, would you? I wouldn't mind knowing a couple of the others - dvd cover and book cover. But I'd like to know that magazine dimensions in particular.
