View Full Version : scale/rotate point or poly selections
Roger Eberhart 04-24-2003, 05:17 AM Is it possible in R8 to scale or rotate a point or poly selection around an arbitrary point? Or does it force you to use the center of the selection? I've been playing with the demo and can't figure out a way to do this.

I don't thnk that there is a way to add plugins to the demo but if you ever get the full version there is a great plugin named MoveSheaRotate.
the link to it is in the pluginsthread under the cinema resources subforum.
the plugin allows you to do exactly what you are talking about

Simply put this http://www.plugincafe.com/download_browse.asp?IDnum=P1200111647AXIS02&FormAction=DOWNLOAD in the plugins folder of Cinema 4D, it's David's AxisCenter, it should do the job
wrong again, third eye always know best. ahhggh. ohh well its been a while since i used the demo shouldnt have opened my mouth.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but C4D seems to ignore the axis position when in point or poly mode. So the AxisCenter plugin really doesn't help.

You can disable this in preferences. It's called center axis on selection or something like that, in the general tab.

Okay, that solves the axis problem. However, I can't get C4D to rotate or scale around the axis. It still wants to use the center of the selection even though the axis has been moved.

Hi Roger,
Actually, that's one of the big problems with C4D's modeller. Whenever you make a vertex/edge/polygon selection, it _always_ scales and rotates around the centre of the selection. You can't choose where you'd like the centre to be.
I wasn't going to mention this until it was actually ready, but since it's exactly what you're asking for:
I'm close to finishing a plugin (powerAxis) which addresses this issue and gives _complete_ control over the modelling axis.
Basically this will give you the following abilities:
1. Specify an arbitrary 'Origin' location and orientation in numerous ways.
2. Use the specified 'Origin' as the centre of scaling and rotation for vertex/edge/polygon selections, or the entire object.
3. Store a set of useful 'Origins' within an object for quick reselection.
E.g. You can select a single vertex, then press a button to align the 'Origin' with that vertex. Repeated pressing will cause the orientation to cycle through several possibilities depending upon context. In this case it would cycle between having an axis aligned with the vertex normal, and having an axis aligned with one of the vertex edges, whilst also having another axis aligned with the edge normal. It cycles through all edges of the vertex in turn.
Having specified the origin, you can now make a completely different selection (doesn't even need to be the same object), and use the standard scale and rotate tools to transform your selection around your chosen origin. At any time you can press a button to turn the plugin off, and C4D will then immediately revert to its usual
behaviour.
This plugin will not be free, but there will be a free (time limited) evaluation version.
In the meantime, or if you want a free plugin, then as has already been mentioned 'MoveShearRotate' can provide some of the control you are after.
Cheers - Steve

Man, I'm glad you dropped that bomb Steve! Could you see me squirming.
I've been testing this plugin and it absolutely rocks! It is to R8 what Edge Extrude and Cutter were to XL7--a tool that anyone serious about modeling in Cinema must have.
