View Full Version : Satyr Girl (WIP)
Venge 04-24-2003, 03:37 AM So, first post, so hopefully I'm doing everything right. This is the head of a Max5 poly character that I began last fall. I only had 2 weeks to finish the entire character for a class final at the time and now I'm resurecting her as I am sorely in need of material for a demo reel. Her body is basically done, although I'm revamping the hands. As you can see, I've just started to create morph targets for facial expressions and lip sync. So. Tell me what you think! :scream: All feedback is greatly appreciated!

And the body thus far. I'm not gonna attach the sides until I finish modeling that hand for the sake of efficiency. Thanks!

i really like the style you have going on... except in the nose... it's too thin & vaguely reminiscent of michael jackson's lol but aside from that it's really looking very nice

Ha! I totally agree, and actually I was slightly inspired by that for some odd reason. He has a totally bizarre nose... like a cute anime style nose gone horribly wrong. I've been debating about whether or not to change it. Thanks!

it's not too bad... i mean it looks good for the character. but if you really are looking to change it, i'd maybe just tilt the tip down a bit or something. no need for a massive overhaul lol!

Hey, could you toss in wireframes, too? Those are always interesting to see. Hmm... the transition from her little furry puff on her leg to her thigh looks a little weird right now, or is that a puff of a pant leg? I like the design, though, keep it up. With the nose, maybe if you were to shorten it a little bit it wouldn't look quite so Michael Jacksony, but hey, if you say you want it to look like that....

Well... i didn't do a lot to it.. but we'll see if any one likes this better. ;) And the mesh isn't as clean as I'd like it to be. Oh, and they are pants.

if she's a satyr shouldn't she have goat legs?

Well, a satyr was the original inspiration but I only loosely based her on that concept. She's too cutsie to have hairy goat legs. If she did she's the type that would shave or wax them or something...and then naked goat legs? Ewww!:surprised But perhaps if I made her boots cloven...? That could add a bit too her perhaps.

Your eye needs work, have you read the Pixar eyes forum?

Basically there should be three maps. Assuming you're using Max for materials, I found the Shellac material to be the best.
Solution:
Base Material - Colour (iris) + bump map (to cast a 'shade' on the iris) scaled to fit each other .. and ZERO specular.
Shellac - Just a blinn shader with 200 specular and 70-90 glossiness.
There's been talk about adding a "tear" water edge just above the bottom eyelid. I've not worked on any cartoon models (thus enormously big eyes) yet so I don't know how effective it is. Worth a try on your model.

New nose, and I tried that eye tutorial. Turned out better than the originals...abd now I think I've spent way too much time on them. :surprised So I'm going to try to move on now.
So... do you mean more detail on her current surface? Or like just adding a glorious amount of accessories and the like? Because her form is very cartoonish... But I'd thought about adding jewelry, and some sort of fantastic headdress maybe. But I kinda like her simple as she is...just do a lot with maps. What do you think?
Thank you for all your help. Keep it coming!

Like the model and style, found one thing though, but thats probably just my brain in its usual sleep deprived state imagening things.
The boots... the boots look like high heels with rubber socks over, kinda cool tough I must say :)

Hi Heather :) That looks good, like what you have done with her. The eyes are looking good, how is San Francisco? you should take some digital pictures or something and send them to me about where you guys are etc. Are you working on this reel for that animation company that shares the building with Jeremy? Anyway, that is coming along nicely, the mesh is clean in the areas that count, so I woudnt worry too much about it. Talk to you later.
