View Full Version : Bones problem in Max 5

I'm following the tutorial included with Max 5 to rig my character. One of the steps in the tutorial requires you to change your time settings (from -1000 to +10000), to make sure your controllers have enough time and you don't need to mess in the track view later on.

The problem is that, when I want to move my spine, MAX hangs. I opened a few earlier versions of my character, and I found the problem started occuring after the step I mentioned above. I scaled the time down, until 1500, and I tried to move the spine again. At first, it hung again, but after about 5 seconds, it moved. So apparently, the longer my animation time, the longer the system hangs when trying to move the spine.

Anyone know what can be done about this? This is only a school assignment, and doesn't need to be longer than 30 seconds, but once I'm ready to move on to some longer animations, this will be a bigger problem if there's no solution to it...

Thanks

Hm.

I thought the new IK tech didn't care about the lenght of the animation. Anyway, it's only important to do the -1000 - 10000 thing for setting up the wiring, after that you can change it back down to 0-750 or whatever you need. That should give you your performance back..?

Discreet broke Spline IK when they patched MAX to 5.1. There's an active thread on it on the discreet weboard. No animations longer than 500 frame with Spline IK or it becomes unstable. Reducing the frame count will fix.

Thanks. At least now I know it's not just me. So, actually, it is impossible to make long animations with Max right now?

No, you can make long animations. You just break things into smaller scenes. Really, you should be thinking this way in anycase. Watch your adverage film. How long do you think there is between cuts? Ten seconds is a long time to not change the view. Think about each file as a single cut. This will keep your individual max files smaller and less prone to corruption as well. That being said, it would be nice if everytime they fix one thing they didn't break two. :hmm:
