Title: Interior study with MAX and mental ray
Name: Jonathan Howard Jonathan Howard
Country: United States
Software:
A nice scale interior study. Spent a good while on the rug and the leather surfaces. Both based on Arc-Des. Subtlties are pretty subtle unless you know me. The picture on the wall is a honeymoon gift and I couldn't help putting a teapot on the bookshelf. I'd like to send special thanks to Jeff Patton, who has filled the internet with help for all. His research has helped me a lot.
As for technical info, I can only say a few things:
IES Sun was not used.
3 area lights with raytraced shadows. 1 for each window; 1 for the french doors. Photos used only for outside the room, the wood floor, rug and stand-in books (3d books but very low-poly). All other textures created in MAX.

Nice lighting however the shadowing in the corner above the bookshelf looks strange. Check the proportions of the couch cushions, the height of the seat seems wrong. The height of the door knobs also seems to be too high.

Wow! Great work. Who knew there was such talent in Sugar Land?:)
I'm just wondering if you got your training locally?

No formal training to speak of except my own disipline. Self-taught, loads of reading and reasearch and tears ;)
Will reply to "Shadow Man" this weekend. I thought I did enough real-world research on my lighting and shadows frm my actual bedroom for the conversion to a made up living area. I'll check the shadow issue and get back to him. If you consider that the windows are the only actual point of light entry, you'd have to assume the corner would get left out as neither light hits it directly... I'll verify though.
I thank you all for the kind words. Really appreciated! :)

Self taught! Amazing really. Even more impressive work seen in that light.
I do think RobC's observations are correct especially the door handle height (having made quite a few doors myself). However that said these details only become evident at a second look. Which is to say the overall impact and lasting impression is one of a very finely crafted image.
Hey wait a sec I see you removed "Sugar Land" as your location. I guess I got that confused with Sugar Land Texas which is part of the greater Houston metroplex. It is a very affluent and well educated community. Sorry about the mistake. I'm trying to pick the brains of the CG community to research good schools in the Houston area.

Don't know how the Sugar Land got removed. Probably a user-error on my part. Thanks for the words again all. As for the shadow, I hope you guys are right, because that will mean that mental ray is wrong ;) I'll find out this weekend and figure out what the heck I missed!! :)
After all, isn't MAX plop-n-render now??
