Title: Gateworld
Name: Nick Jacoubowsky
Country: USA
Software: Carrara, Hexagon, Photo-Paint

Modeled in Hexagon and Carrara. Rendered in Carrara. Postwork in Photo-Paint. Critiques welcome.

All inbound traffic to Capitalworld is required to pass by one of the six Gateworlds in order to be security scanned. The rings are artificial, comprised of fluorescent particles whose color patterns can be controlled by ray projectors on the planet surface (there was an infamous episode when Byortz the Food Maker hacked into the projector control system and made the rings display "Eat At Byortz"--the bureaocracy was not amused). Besides conveying a sense of massive technological prowess and grandiose esthetics, the rings also aid in the scanning process. Nevertheless, the rings have fallen into disrepair ever since the economic downturn of 03D4750.

This picture was supposed to be a quicky, based on a painting I did about 15 years ago, but technical problems got in the way (my laptop died). I decided to give the spaceships a consistent visual technology in the same way that road vehicles have a consistent look (usually four wheels but sometimes more or less). Hence the basic T shape with the leading edge being perfectly straight, like a knife to cut through space.

You really get some phenomenal results from Hex and Carrara.
The planets rings are a great surprising and unexpected treatment. And they work really well.
Is this a story line you have developed yourself?

A planet that casts a shadow on its ring? I'm no astro-freak, but that not possible :D Nice concept, though!

Very good work, but I also think that the lighting looks a little too sharp. It looks like a spot light too close to the planet. I would suggest more of a distance light and maybe some global illumination with a space HDRI, just my suggestion. You have done some really good modeling and I really like the image. Keep it up.

Thank you for the comments!

Yes.

I don't see how it could not be possible. Or perhaps you're talking about the second shadow at the top. That's caused by a distant off-camera moon.

It looks like a spot light too close to the planet
That's because the camera is at a wide angle setting (to emphasize the scale). I did use both distant light (with soft shadows) and global illumination (set to 500% brightness).

An image search for Saturn shows quite a few photos where it casts a very sharp shadow on its ring (and also the ring will cast a shadow on the planet itself).

Looks nice! Based on these comments, I think my main complaint on the ring shadows is that one of them is too blurry while the other is a little bit too sharp. Also, the shadows don't seem parallel to each other, which I would imagine them to be at this angle.

Thanks.

The moon shadow is blurry because the moon is very far from the planet and rings. As for the shadow parallelousness (?!) I think it may look non-parallel due to an optical illusion with the converging and curving lines on the rings.
