Hi everyone,

I'm working through a tut using maya PLE. The tut is designed for 3d studio, and towards the begining they reccomend you Sub-D your model and then work on it with an editable mesh. I'm comming from a thin lightwave background. Now that I'm in maya, I always work with polys and then do a 'modify/convert/polys to sub-ds', then check out my model and see how it looks before undoing and going back to work on the polys. Is there a better way to work with sub-ds? Can I use an editable mesh like in the tutorial I'm using? (link below)

Thanks people

In maya you can edit the polygon proxy shape and see the results in the sub-d model. Under the Sub-d Modellignmenu use Polygon Proxy Mode.

this is great...working much more efficently now. But how do I convert from sub-d back to polygon (some of my verticies are under the sub-d mesh and hard to see...would be nice to be able to pop back to normal polys). I hate to post such simple questions here...but this just hasent been covered in any of the books/tuts ive been through

i think
modify>convert>sub to poly
just make shelf buttons by holdin ctrl alt shift

if i convert poly to sub, and then sub back to poly, I get a really tight mesh...not what i started with

There are options to control that.. choose vertices in the options

What I do is just hide sub-ds in the viewport, rather than switching back and forth. Another thing you might try that will be more like the 3ds or lightwave way of doing things is using the poly smooth proxy tool, rather than subds.
