First off sorry about the audio, i dont know why its doing that :)

1. At the moment, as you can see in the video, to bend the character is a 2 stage process, i have to move the shoulder control, and then rotate it, to get a nice shoulder bend. Is there anyway of making this a 1 stage movement, with the setup i have?

2. Again in the second part of the video, i try to demonstrate the rotation of the shoulders, in a y axis, but as you can see, it doesn't work how i thought it may, due to the bones being locked to the IK. How would i go about making a y rotation, that degrades in strength down the spine?

Howdy,

The answer to your first question is fairly simple. You can add another controller in the center of the body and link the chest controller to it. Then when you rotate the center controller, it will move the chest controller. This type of setup allows the spine to behave as though it was both IK and FK at the same time. I have a tutorial on how I set that up. Although I'm using Cinema 4D and my rigging plugins, I'm sure you can follow along and do a similar setup in any application:

Someone else who knows 3DS Max will have to answer your second question. ;)

Adios,
