Hi all. I'm very new to facial animation but I'd like to try that with some of my characters for a school project. I modelled the characters in 3D max 8 and will animate them there as well.

As the title mentions, one of my characters has a moustache and I'm not sure how to go about animating his face because of the moustache. The moustache right now is a separate mesh.

I also have a dog character. Both characters are going to lip synch to a audio recording.

Are there any tutorials on facial animation? I tried to find on google and CGTalk but nothing useful.

Thanks

There is a great book on facial animation called "stop staring" which demonstrates a few facial animation techniques. Includes blend shapes and spline wire mesh deformation.

Hi softocean. Thanks for the reply and recommendation. Was wondering why no one replied.

Do you know of such tutorials online?

Heres what I could dig up doing a search on facial animation blend shapes:

http://web.alfredstate.edu/ciat/tutorials/FacialExpressions.htm

http://www.jawa9000.com/technical/SDK-Blendshapes/SDK-Blendshapes.htm

and you'll need shapes to represent the basic phonemes:
