View Full Version : What are people using to design their 3D images?
eokorie 04-23-2003, 07:25 PM I still consider myself to be a newbie when it comes to 3D as I still have a lot to learn, but I just though I might ask what people are using when designing their 3D images with Cinema 4D.
Are you using a mouse and keybaord?
Are you using a graphics tablet?
What's your preference?

I use nothing but Razor Boomslang mice. They are very precise and have 5 buttons (1 scrool wheel). I use 3 of the buttons for axis constraining.

I use a Wacom Intuis 2 6X8 (yes that's big enough) for BodyPaint and Photoshop for my texture work.
I suggest getting these used on eBay if you're looking to save a buck. Most people who sell them, have never used them. :D

i use a mouse and keyboard, as the tablets i look at are a bit to expensive...but as i understand, tablets are really only beneficial with point modeling...for characters and such...but how would i know? i dont make characters.

medula: shoulda known ya'd have a boomslang...very cool....i tried once and well my mouse control went to s**t....i think they need a bit of getting used to....i heard microsofts new version 3 optical is very good on the accuracy part...but have not tried it so don't know.
On a Wacom...i was thinking about getting a wacom....but i seem to remember someone post an issue with wacom...is this just rubbish...or are there issues with wacoms and cinema?

I've been using the wacom for a while now, and actually prefer it over the mouse for ALL my computer work. The pen just seems a lot easier and more intuitive.
The wacom with C4D works fine as long as you tell C4D you are using a table (in the preferences). Some folks have had trouble, but there is also a "hi res" checkbox that seems to fix most of them.

I use a Logitech MX-700 Cordless mouse (7 buttons, semi-programmable), a Nostromo Speedpad by Belkin (14 useable programmable keys, plus 3 shift states for 42 total), and a Grafire tablet for BP and PS. I'll upgrade the tablet to an Intuos one day.

I use a Microsoft USB human interface device... or if I have a headache just an Microsoft optical intellimouse explorer :D I did have a tablet here somewhere, maybe I should dig that out and try it with c4d

i have a direct brain to app interface... don't you guys? my only problem is they wouldn't let me buy the brain at the shop so it's useless...
aside from that i have a microsoft intellimouse explorer for all modelling and animation work, and an a5 wacom for paint/sketch like things.

MS Optical Wheel mouse, Wacom A5 Graphire for painting. I use the tablet in Cinema okay if I'm swapping between the two.
Optical mice are so much more precise than bally ones. In fact, they're "wheely" good... *groan*
I want one of mdme_sadies brain interfaces, though, sounds useful, depending on the brain of course.

I use a track ball from Logitech and sometime i switch to my regular logitech mouse. And both are optical.
I think on getting a Wacom tablet.

Mouse? Sounds familiar. Oh yeah, that thing with the nice red light.
I use a Wacom (A5) for absolutely everything. I can't imagine drawing paths, creating masks and or painting in Photoshop without it, let alone illustrator and freehand.
I've been using a pad with Cinema for nigh on five years and not a single problem (and that's on a mac).

graphire, A4Tech five button mouse with dual scrolls for vert and horizontal. Last important piece which unforunately with all the testing I rarely use because I can't set up every new beta, is the norstrom speedpad.

Wacom intuos, Nostromo SpeedPad (though I'm not using it well yet), and Microsoft optical mouse (4 buttons and wheel)
I like the Wacom pen for moving points with the magnet as well as for photoshop, painter and bodypaint.
Oh, and for those really looonnnng renders, I use a Tacoma acoustic cutaway guitar and a Sierra Nevada iced pint:)

It's made by Belkin for gaming, but it's programmable so it can work for C4D
I think Kai mispelled:
Nostromo SpeedPad (approx. $24 -30.)

switching back and forth between a mouse and a tablet can be helpful in relieving/avoiding repetitive strain type injuries. learned this the hard way after crashing my arm on an intense project a few years ago.
i use an intuous 6x8 and the (2-button, 1wheel) mouse that comes with it. i've had bigger tablets in the past, but the 6x8 seems to be the best trade-off between resolution and desk space consumption.
the BP bug in 8.1 is a real pain. C4D isn't recieving the pressure variations from the pen, so the pressure you first apply at the beginning of the stroke is used for the whole stroke. hope this one's fixed soon.

I am currently just using a standard mouse and keyboard..... which is a bummer cos i can't seem to get the accuracy I need when creating my models and having seen what you guys are using, i really do need to start looking for new alternatives
