Hey guys,

Thought you might be interested in some new content i've got at http://rhys-works.com. Can find tutorial content on the tutorials page (http://rhys-works.com/tutorials) and also our recent video demo reel voiceover by our guest speaker that can be found on the front page, that's both interesting and informative. We'll be running a sequence of similar videos into the future, as well as new tutorial content coming up (the next will be making your own particle system in expressions).

Enjoy

R.

Thanks, glad you found the site useful :) Hopefully will be more to come pretty soon. Meanwhile, im coming along slowly with some AE plugin development, but it's hard work. The lack of documentation is a problem when adapting from other API's and so on, but hopefully i'll get there in the end, just feeling my way around for the moment.

What are you trying to develop? what previous experiences? Maybe I can get you some contacts to developers...

Well, i'm working on developing some effect-based plugins, possibly with some mild particle generation capability. I'm a computer scientist, but my forte lies more in Java than C++, though that's not too much of an issue atm. I've been working on some standalone java apps with media control but obviously this is a little different, i'm basically just trying to get my head around the format of the plugins and the API and so on, how things work (i'm beyond the point of compiling a skeleton plugin, they just don't do a whole lot yet ;) ).

Ah, I see. Too bad your plugins don't do much yet... ;O) Hope you can come up with something interesting. Any plans perhaps to program a wrapper for Processing? Would be cool to use some of that stuff directly in AE. Or some workflow-oriented stuff - something along the lines of Bresnev Shu's Expression Effects would be a godsend (I was too late and never bought them and now they are gone... *sigh*; I still have the demo for reference...).

Well i'm open to suggestions at this stage, you can bet if i can make one decent plugin i'll move onto more. I expect i'll be tinkering around for a long time though. Bresnev Shu's Expression Effects i'm unfamiliar with.. i assume it's something along the lines of an effect palette to choose from that creates an expression to do the job? Or is it the other way around? You make the expression and then can save it as a standard effect. Sounds like something you could set up with a script maybe.

I had some ideas for a keyer as well, things you can't do with current keyers on the market that occurred to me would be useful in my nightmares with greenscreens. Though i was considering that for a standalone app.

Nope. It's a collection of helper effects to give access to otherwise inaccessible data (mask vertices, mask path etc.). I've attached the old demo from 2003, maybe you can take a look at it. I'd be particularly interested in getting the Vertex Analysis and Vertex Catalyst functionality somehow... I know there's no big market for this stuff, but if you consider it a fun and learning experiment and something usable comes of it, you'd at least make one customer happy - me. ;O)

Hey Mylenium,

I just quickly checked out those plugins (tinkered with vert settings), that is really really useful. Can think of all kinds of reasons why this would be handy.

Not saying i can actually -do- it, but i'll certainly keep it in mind.

Also if anyone feels like joining me on this roller coaster ride that is learning AE plugin development feel free to get in touch :P the more the merrier.
