View Full Version : attach a new object to an existing lattice
leviathan 04-23-2003, 06:18 PM Hi all,
there is a way to add an object to an existing lattice?
Thanks!

yep, pretty easily ... but it has a hitch. Both objects have to have identical topology.
select your lattice deformer and then Window > Relationship Editors > Deformer Sets on the left is your lattice deformer node .. on the right you'll notice your 'original' object selected AND your lattice node (which is automatically part of any relationship selections you make since it's hardwired into the lattice deformer node).
You'll notice in the Deformer Sets Relationship Editor that the ffd1Set node contains a list of all the CVs of your object ... perhaps there's a workaround here ? I dunno.
Anyway ... if your object is identical, then the procedure is pretty quickly done:
Ctrl-LMB your 'original' and Ctrl-LMB your new object and the connection is made . You'll have to move that new object within the lattice to see the deformations take effect

Thanks Sammy!!
It worked!!
I need this trick to re-attach a softbody created lattice to the original object (I needed a softbody copy to applay a turbulence field to make the object "live").
Thanks a lot!

...mmmmhhhh...
I fit a lattice to a Nurbs sphere, and then, with your method, I fit the already created lattice to a character (lots of Nurbs and poly objects, with grups, etc.) and.... it worked!!
Seems it is not necessary to have the same topology... :)
I'm using Maya 4.5.

You can add or substract any object to/from a deformer set at any time via the deformer set editor. I love this and it saved my as* a couple of trillion times.
Rock on

another way to add either an object or the points of any object is to use the edit membership tool: animate > deform > edit membership tool.
in your view port first select the lattice and then right click over the object and choose the CV/vertex selection mask. you will then be able to add these points to the lattice (select all the points of the object to add the entire object to the lattice).
just remember that all the points of an object must be with the perimeter of the lattice in order to be effected.
hope that helps.
