View Full Version : envelopes and assigning links?
Macarthur 01-02-2008, 02:58 PM have recently finihsed modelling on my first character model in 3ds max 9 and I am now having some problems with setting up the envelopes within the Physique modifier. My problem is specificaly with the head and neck. I cant find any way of keeping the entire head Rigid whilst keeping the vertices on the neck deformable, i have tried doing it using envelopes and i have tried just assigning the vertices and making the head ones rigid and the neck ones deformable but whatever I do I always get either the head deforming and stretching or the neck moving completely rigig. Does anyone know of any newbie mistakes i might be making or know of any detailed tutorials on the subject?

Personally I am not a big fan of physique - I get much better results with skin. However if you are having issues with the head AND neck either being too rigid or too squashy then that suggests to me that you are assigning your verts incorrectly. You ideally want the verts that are effectively the skull to be totally controlled by your head bone with your neck verts having a transition from their top verts weighted to the head bone through to the bottom verts being weighted to the neck.

I agree...use skin, physique hasnt been updated forever (so I hear). Another thing to keep in mind is envelopes is only the primary step in skinning. They just give you a very basic weighting...a starting step.
