View Full Version : What is Brazil?
Red_Riot 04-23-2003, 05:18 PM What is brazil?
I see it mentioned a lot on these boards, and I haven't come across it yet in my 3dsMax book, although I have skipped the lighting and material chapters so far so I could be missing something. apparently it's a render thing, however, as I stated I haven't seen it in my book.
Any links / information that you fellas could provide for me?
Everyone has to learn stuff at some time, this is my time.:wavey:
(edit)
Here's some of my work thus far too:

Brazil is a third-party renderer for max, You won't find it mentioned in any max/discreet documentation because it is third-party and discreet want you to rely on max's built in renderer.
Brazil is nice but a tad slow and expensive. Check out Splutterfish (http://www.splutterfish.com) for more info. There use to be free betas around but now I think you can download a limited demo.

I wouldn't concern myself with Brazil at this stage in your learning process. The tasks of modeling, texturing, and rendering via plain old scanline should keep you busy for a bit. At this point, Brazil will only serve as an unnecessary distraction IMO. Once you have a good understandnig of the basics, then you can move on to different renderers and other fun stuff.

Sorry, I should have mentioned: "[in my experience with the beta versions] it's a tad slow". Maybe they improved on the final release?

Red_Riot: If you live in the area maybe you can get to this (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57928) for some good info on Brazil?

I think you are talking about the Alpha version. The beta haven't been released to the public.
:)
And yes.. the final version, which still gets updates, is leaps ahead of the early alpha versions.

Ha brazil is still slow. But what do you expect from a render engine that didn't come with max. The default sanline render engine in my opinion is still faster. I have heard rumors that mental ray for 3dsmax is pretty fast. Not sure if they have one for 5.1 yet or even 5.0.

Brazil is still a bit slow (i can only judge other's rendertimes, never tried it). What do i expect from a renderer that doesn't come with Max? Try finalRender or Vray and you'll experience fast renderers. The Mental Ray version for Max (2.1 i think) was ultraslow at gi. There should be a great article at www.richardrosenman.com about Max 3rd party renderers, check it.

I think I remember seeing an update for Mental Ray for Max 5, on their support pages (the downloads bit) just a few hours ago.
