Hey guys,

I was wondering about putting real footage and 3D animations together. I have a faily powerful computer and Maya 8.5. Basicaly what im wondering is, is it possible for me to film lets say an empty field with my video camera. Then in Maya, create an explosion or some flying object and then somehow "insert" that into the footage of the field. Basically joining real footage with animations. Thanks.

Yeah it's possible. You'll just have to get yourself a copy of Shake or After Effects to composit the two.

Film your background shot (should be at a descend resolution, not from a phone camcoder), matchmove it with either a free app like Voodoo, or with profesionell and expensive apps like Match Mover og Boujou. Then make your animation in Maya, insert the camera solved from the matchmoving into Maya, render your CG elements and compose it into your background shot in a composition app like After Effects or Shake. Search around for demos, tutorials and basic teqchniques and begin to work.
