View Full Version : Rigging & Animation Demo Reel
bsb312 01-01-2008, 10:35 PM This is the first cut of my first demo reel. I posted one of the character rigs before but there is alot of new material in this reel. Questions, comments, and critism is extremely welcome.

those are super duper sexy rigs.. loved them, 7 stars for your reel  . I am new to maya, just started rigging stuff and have few questions.. how much time it took for you to rig the Grover and the Fat Torso, 2.) whats this animation tree/animation brach? i have never seen them in maya (its time for me to google them.. but would love to know about them from you) :) thanks

Animation Trees are used in the Unreal Editor to blend animations for gameplay. After the tree is constructed, Kismet(vissual scripting) is used to trigger an animation when an event happens. for example, when this character is shot or takes damage (event) play this certain animation then blend back to its default breath cycle or a cycle where the charater is breathing harder(action).
Branches is terminology that I pretty much made up. Since the tree I constructed was divided into two main sections, I reffer to them as branches. I dont know...whatever.
Im really new to the Unreal Editor and there is whole lot for me to learn. I barely scratched the surface of what is possible with the power of unreal. Im hoping to get an internship with a next gen game studio in the near future.
Thank you for the kind comments. I really appreciate it!

This is great :)
Is there a downloadable version ? ( I like to keep all rigging reels that I see here )...
Fat Torso ? LOL This is great ! Fat-looking
The only thing I wasn't sure about is aroung 2:50, on the Gangsta Rig, when you moved the right shoulder control, it seems like it changed the hand's orientation, wich whould be bad for contacts no ? :wise:
Man, gotta watch this FatTorso again ^_^

This is true and it is really bad for contacts. It only occurs when the clavical is rotated. Its a constraint issue. Ive done lots of biped rigs and this is probably the first time I had this problem since I was expierimenting with a different setup. I know I can fix it and I will but like I said, this is my first cut for this reel and I will probably replace the gangsta body rig with something that is not so standard. I was truely focusing on the facial rig.
Thanks for noticing. I was waiting for someone to catch that.lol.

Great work!
Are you a student at the Ai downtown? I always wonder what kind of talent lurks around there. I'm over at the Schaumburg campus.
Critique wise I felt it was a little long. I would cut down the first scene so it is shorter. When you are posing the landrover you are repeating a few things that coult be cut our or re-recorded to take less time and still show off all the great rigging.
The animation of the rover I would render properly and cut it down. Also make sure your animation shows off all the controls you focused on in the previous demo. When the rovers comes out of the bigger robot the wheels don't react to the ground at all and there isn't a lot of that cool fluid motion you first show with the rig.
Torso was great, nothing to add there.
Gangster, if you want to show off the facial, start off with it maybe. It seems like a great rig. Again you can cut down on some repetition.
Hope this helps a bit. I think you will have no problems finding an internship. Good luck.

Yeah its my last quarter there.
Thanks so much for the critique. I agree with all your suggestions. Im gonna do what I can to shorten it. Also the animation is still rough, I gotta work on the weight and the "fluid" motion.

Right now , I look up to Bill as a hero , I try to make my rigs as good as you make yours. All the rigs , Fat Torso , the humanoid rig ( I forgot the name ) all of them are simple but effective.
Also you can rig in both Max and Maya , and that makes you even more fantastic !
Great job , man !

Thanks a lot deatheater4ever and harishanim for your very kind comments.
for the fat torso I used a very simple technique that I actually explain (terribly) throughout that sequence. The rig is layered with different joint chains. For the fatty masses, I created joint chains; these joint chains are rigged with dynamic splines. To do this you need to create a curve and make it dynamic with the hair system. I forgot to mention that maya unlimited is needed. From there I create IK spline handles with the dynamic splines. Now that the joint chains solve with dynamics, I bind the joint chains to NURBS surfaces. these surfaces are then added as influences.
