When creating an animation with characters, what is the best way to go about animating the characters.

For example, I imagine that the character(s) will have a walk cycle, climb, roll, duck etc. Is it better to set up animations on a character in a separate file and merge them into the scene? Or is it better to animate them 'in-situ', that is place the characters on set and animate them there.

Animating is not something I've generally done. So I would be grateful for any useful tid-bit of information in this process.

Thanks.

Forlax.

I would keep the animations separate. If you're making those animations for a demo reel I'd imagine you'll render them out and put the images you rendered together in some video editing program. The reason why I'd keep them separate is to keep the file size small. Unless you need to have the animations interacting with each other, like with two characters then you'd want them in the same file.
