Hi!
You can tell how you make a smoke with particles or have you a good hint?

Create a standard material.

Make the material face mapped.

Add a gradient map to both the diffuse and opacity.

Make the gradient radial

By this time, you should have the basic particle material.

Create a particle system.

Make the particle type "facing" or "constant".

Apply the material you made to the particle system.

If you'd like to have a look at this basic setup, you can download an R5 file with some clouds made using this technique here:

Hope that's of some help. Play with the setting as much as possible, and toy around with different techniques. This is but one way to go about doing it.

Best of luck!

It depends on what type of smoke you are after too.
Particles aren't that convincing for thin, whispy smoke ( like cigarette smoke ) or really thick stuff ( like oil fire smoke )
Better off using models for those types of effects.....

Also, comercial plugins are available for creating truely realistic smoke/volumetric pyroclastic effects:

UltraShock:

Afterburn:

This type of smoke (face mapped particle method described above) was used in Contact to make the nebulae, in Ice Age to make clouds of snow, and in Star Wars episode one to make clouds of mist and spray over a waterfall; it can look completely realistic.:shame:
