View Full Version : how to animate a roll of paper being unrolled.

i have an animation which required me to roll out a big sheet of paper from a roll.

edit: and not only that, but the paper roll has to get smaller as the paper comes off.

can i accomplish this with the helix spline? seams there is not straightening command. bend deformer? seams not viable.

any suggestions?

thanks

if it helps, a better example would be unrolling a red carpet.

seams easy, but i just can't figure out a good solution.

thanks

Just use the bend deformer.

tried that. problem with the bend deformer is it bends everything into a perfect circle. not a spiral - or a progressively small circle.

In the Mograph version, a ribbon is a helix.
It was posted in a thread a while ago, something like ribbon unroll.

There's a carpet unrolling scene file in the downloads section at C4D Cafe here. (http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=162)

It uses a bend deformer like how Per describes. It's not technically correct but should be good enough to give the illusion of carpet unrolling.

If you have MoGraph then you can use the Spline Wrap object to more accurately do what you want.

Hope this helps.

sweet i will try the mograph way.

i think i also figured out the bend deformer. i had to use 2 of them, and it gets progressively small.

thanks all!

Just a single bend deformer works fine, you simply need to angle it to the sheet being rolled up and move it up slightly, once it is correctly angled and placed simply moving it along in one axis will roll/unroll the sheet.

hmm. ok, i rotated it slightly to get it to curl in, but moving it along an axis is not unrolling it.

what am i doing wrong?

per, do you use a limited bend, or unlimited?

ok, i downloaded the file from the post vid2k2 mentioned. not sure why my personal bend won't work correctly, but hey, got it worked out.

thanks all!
