View Full Version : female head. Need honest crits and comments!
Ayreon 04-23-2003, 12:52 PM Hi everyone. Thi is my latest exercise, modeling a female head. I know it's not the most original idea, but after cars and machines I thought it would be a good exercise to give a female head another try. My first one was a freakish monster :D
I've been staring at thi9s head for far to long, and I'm not able to see the flaws anymore. So, please give me a hand to improve the model, and tell me what could be changed to improve.
Thanks!

to tell its a good start. but why did you already textured it??
in my opinion the mesh isn't ready by far!!
do you use any refs?
is this going to be a cartoon or realistic character.
if the last:
I would try to fix the ears. and the basic shape of the head.
good luck!!

Thanks for your comments willem!
How do you mean change the shape of he head? I'm using reference, and I think the height and width are correct, but I could be wrong. Could you give me some directions? I agree, the ears still need some work, I'll look into that.
I textured it to take a break from modeling, and I guessed that I would be making any radical changes, just little tweaks here and there, so texturing seemed like a nice break from modeling :D

Overall it seems like you've got really good flow and control over your mesh. The only thing I see right off the bat is that the ears look a little low on the head. But that's just me being nitpicky. Great work!

the sides of the head look to rounded to me. It's almost an egg-shaped head

That face of yours is pretty good I think. It reminds me of someone I've met before. I've notice one thing that I think you should fix. On the profile, take a look at where the base of the skull ends on the back of the head. If you look at any anatomy book, usually the base of the skull ends where the ear ends so I would bring the roundness up to the bottom of the ear lobe.:)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!
Here's an update.
I've flattened the side of the head, don't know if it's enough. In the wireframe you can se that I changed the back of the head. I added some small wrinkels under the eyes, although the jpeg compression wipes out every detail I put in the bumpmap :hmm:
I've restyled the cheeckbones, made them a bit more pronounced.
changed the specular level of the skin, just a bit higher.
I've raised the ears, so they are now placed higher.
Let me know if things are getting better, I really apreciate the feedback, it really helps me alot!!

P.S: If anybody knows some good hairtutorials, please, let me know, because I'm getting nowhere at this time, all my attempts fail :annoyed:

The eyes need to be deeper. Sink them back in until the foremost portion of them is vertically lined up almost with the corner of the mouth. Then soften the cheeks back so that they don't poof forward so much next to the nose. Also, the eyeballs themselves are too far inwards, giving her a funky crosseyed look-- scoot them outward carefully, and adust the eyelid forward so that the eyeball doesn't poke through.
Then you should be set! I like those freckles! The skin is a bit too glossy, but other than that the shader is rockin.
