tips tricks suggestions?

Yes, I have done that many times. Make your selection, then adjust the levels. There are two little "handles" at the very bottom of the window, right below a black-to-white gradient. If you drag the handle under the black area toward the right, you will see how easily it changes. It may take some messing with but you'll get it with levels :)
Hi I change reflective liquid all the time, going from different flavors with the same image. The best way I have found to do this is to use a gradient map adjustment layer. Sometimes it is usefull to place a level or curve adjustment layer under it as well (playing with it to help with the gradient map above it). Sounds like you are dealing with black and white, but if there is some color in there, I will often set the gradient map to a color blend mode so it doesn't alter the value of the image.
