Title: Blowout at Exit 16A
Name: Till Nowak
Country: Germany
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

This image was created for the CARNIVORA art show and book by Les Barany. It's based on a 3D rendering of a future city, but I spent two weeks in Photoshop to replace almost every pixel of the 3D rendering with 2D elements taken from photos, so I decided to put it in the 2D section. Here you can download a making-of-PDF: http://www.framebox.de/creations/3d/blowout/index.htm. The art show will premiere in Detroits cPop-Gallery on January 12. The book will be released in spring 2008.

This is a really solid and striking image. I wish there was more respect around here for the so-called "photo-manipulation" technique (with a bit of 3D thrown in). I suppose if they were all of this high quality, people might appreciate it more. Great of you to post the making-of PDF, too. I bow to your mighty PS skills.

Onto a couple of comments: I think the weakest part is the car. It's an odd design, what with the slanted wheel and all, that doesn't read well even in perfect lighting, and the detail and lighting on it here (especially the cockpit glass) weakens the overall image - just slightly! I looked at the car on your portfolio and it reads better in that image. Plus, I'm wondering why if the car has that futuristic, slanty wheel, he's putting a standard, current-day wheel on it. But I knit-pick! I love this image!

Strong lightening ang composition. The only thing I could comment is the car, I think there is to much reflection for a dirty material.

Very good work!

Good stuff.

Back in my college days my most admired artist was Jim Burns. This reminds me a lot of his work, in composition, styling and palette. Could do with more breasts though.

It is great (and very rare) to see people as detailed as the man is in this kind of enviromental work.

Great work, absolutely!

I love the inset carlights - and amount of detail, especially the subtle reflections on the car surface - really nice composition

Being a futuristic-lover myself, I loooooove this patte paiting (if you call it that).

It's wonderful! I love the dark orange sunset lighting.

But there's one minor error that I observed, which is merely noticeable if you look closely at the painting but certainly bears to be heard.

I saw that the cracks on the roadway in the foreground are the same exact cracks in the background further down the road. It may only be a careless mistake. I don't know if you have had the time to find other cracks in the road, or merely you were just in the *stream* of things while painting.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

Overall, such a extraordinarily beautiful matte painting. Simply astounding. Reminds me of Steven Spielberg's Minority Report.
