blurred reflexions often slown down 3D rendering.
personnally I render reflexions in a separate pass, then I blur them in compositing which gives more control and is very fast.

how do you render blurred reflection in a seperate pass?
So there is no Renderpass called Reflections.

render 1 pass with reflections, 1 pass without and subtract them in the post application of your choice.
now blur the result (which is the reflections only) and add them on your image that has no reflections.

Can't we render a pass with only refelctions as in 3dsmax?

true true..

in my oppinion that would be way more productive to have a propper renderpasses and render layers functionality a la XSI, than having fluids and stuff.. just a matter of what ppl use more often.. but that has already been discussed a lot and long..

i think you can render just reflections, by using a use background. or you could just uncheck primary visability and leave recieves reflections checked in the render stats for the object.

there are many ways :-)
but AW can do this with one of her own Programmer in
just a day!

as far as i know it is not possible to get maya to render just the reflections
(imagine you have to spheres with textures that both reflect the other..)

there is no way that i could think of rendering them both in one pass and have the reflections of them rendered..

please correct me if i am wrong, since i am looking for a way to do that as well since a long time

cheers

Hmm... so it seems like i have to render the reflections out seperately? There is no way (for a small project) that I can just create a blurred reflection WITHIN maya? thats all I really wanna know :hmm:

In terms or rendering glossy (blurred) reflections within Maya, you can either raytrace in Mental Ray with the DGS Shader (which there are threads about on this site) - or use a reflection map instead of raytracing, and just blur the reflection map.

If you are a master in shadering in maya, you can read this tutorial and then find a mean to create a network to render blurred reflections. Look at the end, the last image.

A soft relfection shader exists in the highend3d shader library !

this is gonna sound reaaaaaaaallly stupid but highend wont let me download shaders or anything, it just links me to the page im already on. do i have to register?

Yes it had happended to me too... But if it is the case, I think they are stupid to obliged people to register to get free stuff. I don't enter in their "game", I won't register to a wenbsite which content is done by the other!:shame:

Oh yes, Highend3D is not membership restricted, the only thing you have to do is turn off the Antivirus or firewall, it letīs me in now!

hmmm... it seems to be quite difficult, but I was thinking, what in real life has a blurred reflection? all I could think of is that the reflection is still hellsuh crisp, its just DOF applies a blur in a way... kinda hard to explain, but I realized I dont need the blurred reflection thing for my image. :D
