View Full Version : Optomizing Vista
JazzyAnimator 12-28-2007, 10:11 PM Hey all. Got a new laptop for christmas that came with Vista Home Premium. Contemplating dual booting with XP, but I'm gonna need to optomize Vista eventually.
So, how/what/where etc.?
I've disabled Aero, changed the appearence settings to mostly "better performance" with a few things added. Tried to get rid of any programs this thing came with that I know I'd never touch. (It's a prebuilt Toshiba.) It's leaps and bounds better then the first few boots but...
I remember in XP I used to have this list from a web site of processes I could disable and whatnot. I'd start disabling everything except what was absolutly necessary, then add things I know I needed then add the odd things I might use here and there and leave everything else out unless I got an error somewhere. It was pretty nice, ended up getting down to like 35 processes. Is there any list/website anyone knows of that might get me going in this direction? Currently running 80 processes, which seems like A LOT!
Thanks.

I'd be intersted in hearing what other people say about this. While I do not have a laptop, I wouldn't mind optimzing my desktop's Vista install.
I too have turned off Aero and many of the other eyecandy items that I don't care for... but I am sure there are many others.
Right now, with Firefox and AVG, I have 78 processes running eating up 55% of my physical memory (2GBs).

I haven't tested this with Rendering, but when you run programs, which need more than the currently available free RAM, Vista reduces its own usage.
You can see that, when you run such a program (like "Blend Test" in Prime95) and quit it. Then i see in the Task-Manager, that there are only 300-400MB of my 2GB used. Normally there are 800-1000MB used.
So I won't care too much about that.
The CPU isn't that much used by Vista, that it would take performance other programs could need. At least at my computer.
A point, where you can optimate Vista (also XP) is the Autostart. Everything not needed (everything you know it is not needed ;)) can get deleted from there.

I think you hit the spot Signal. I'll have to run though that over the next couple days and see what I can get down to.
I totally forgot about autostart, have to run that one too.
Thanks guys.

Vista has a different memory architecture, It uses lot's of free ram to help the operating system run smoother, but when you need more ram for your programs it free's it up.
My friend has a dell xps laptop, he said reinstalling the operating system will get rid of all the preset crap toshiba (any company) likes to load on it.

Guess what?? My frigg'n hard drive is dead. 4 days!! Damnit...well I was contemplating getting a 7200rpm drive anyhow, but I don't have the money now.
Anyhow is there anyway I can get a hold of Vista Home Premium 32bit and use my OEM key on it? It's not like I'm pirating it, just need the install DVD. Also, anyway to extract the drivers from the recovery CD they gave me? I really don't wanna manually hunt down drivers.

Yeah, Vista uses more agressive caching than XP, called SuperFetch. However, it's possible to turn off SuperFetch, but it's not recomended nor neccessary in most cases.

Jazzy, I'm not sure, how the Recovery-DVD works. You could try, but i think you'll send the Harddisk back to the dealer or producer (in Germany it's the dealer) or even the Notebook, so they repair or change the Harddisk and also fix your Vista.
(I now, that you can buy the Anytime Upragde DVD at Microsoft, which has got all the files the normal Install-DVD has, and it costs about a few Euros here, 3 or so. But I can't say, whether you can install Vista with your OEM-Key or not)
Superfetch is useful, if you have enough power. So i won't turn it off.
As well the UAC (User Account Control) isn't senseless, though it needs getting used to it.

To find out the registry key i would recomend runing a program called Belarc. I it will give you all the registry keys on your computer (for every program). Use this with causion though, if those keys you have get out there, there could ba a lot of trouble heading your way. Use belarc then remove belarc.
Hope this helps,

P.S. Sorry for any spelling errors, no spell check right now

Well, an authorized Toshiba center has my laptop currently.
The hard drive wasn't dead, i hooked it up to my desktop and could see everything. Just that anytime it was in the laptop it wouldn't let me get past the initial screen, couldn't even get into bios via F2 or the boot selection screen. It would tell me to wait and never get anywhere. The guy at the shop told me vista has its' own bios. (?!) It sometimes messes with the bootsectors of hard drives, apparently they've been seeing a lot of this.
Anyhow, I have looked at the recovery CD, I can see drivers there and such and it looks like everything I'll need.
Tengwar3 isn't that the same thing as regedit? Or is regedit not available in vista?
