View Full Version : Charachter: (2D) Lady posing in red dress
hesido 04-23-2003, 01:34 AM Hi, this was a pencil illustration that I did in 1997. My reference was a small photo in a magazine ad. I idealized the proportions a bit to my liking. [ I had to edit the description because there was a lot of misunderstanding on how I did it.]
Two days ago, I decided to scan it in and give some color to it. Was harder than I thought :-)
I used Photoshop 7.0, and a Wacom Graphire pad. I'd advise any serious or even semi-serious gfxer to get a graphic pad, the brand shouldn't matter that much.
For the specs and lighting I had to improvise because I had lost the original photo, most of what I remembered was that the lady was blonde and she was wearing red. :) Hopefully I had drawn the main texture of the cloth already in the original illustration, but the speculars were missing of course.
Here is the result:

The original is 1755x1234
Thanks in advance for your opinions. I'd be happy to answer any questions.

cool!
only suggestion:
work more on the head...more details
And the color of her hair could be less uniform (really yellow primal color)
good work!

Hi, thanks for the compliments!
@yoyo2k1: For the head, I wanted it too look simple and smooth with the least possible lines when first drawing. The orginal photo was also very well lit so it showed very little detail of facial features, so I didn't want to do any guess work. So that was also easier for me :D
But I did some guess-work on the wrinkles of the cloth, I added some and removed as I didn't care about the proportions of the wrinkles compared to original. For the color of hair, you are right, it is yellow in a non realistic way, but I preffered vibrant colors, which may well be a wrong decision :)
@silmarilion: Thx, my master in 3d :)
@Everyone: I had to edit the description because 2 of 2 people whom I talked on icq was mislead by the earlier description: One thought it was already a b/w illustration that I just colored with overlay, the other thought it was a direct copy (not due to the "quality" but the description :) )

Due to overwhelming response, I feel the responsibility to post the steps, lol :D
Anyway most of you probably know these already but then again there might be a few who might get a few ideas or some other may suggest a better way.
1-Original scan
2-Pumped up levels so I can get a lot more shading for the colors.
3-Painted underneath the base colors, on seperate layers.
4-Using a mixture of softlight and multiply layers and some curve adjustment layers, I get the shades over the colors. I smeared (smudged) the shades to remove the tissue of paper. Notice there are no specs in this.
5-Added extra shading to skin, and specs improvised over the cloth. Did lots of cleanup to the lines
6-Added a platform for her. Realised the elbows do not line up with the breasts and legs in the same direction, and tweaking the base would look awful, so added a piece of red cloth for her elbows to be more comfortable. Added a really lame backround gradient, and signed.

Hope you like the technique.
