Hi there, i really would like to help people in writting scripts and post them. Lord knows i would make a ton, if i could. Does anyone nkow of some sites for beginners? Also i know nothing about mel really, but there is like script writting programs? I am not sure. i saw scrn shot of some program a guy was using, and some of the script he was writting was red, some was blue. Does anyone one knowere i could get that or even if i need a program like that? Thanks

the best way to learn is by example: pick apart someone else's MEL script and see how and why they coded it the way they did. you'll find a host of free scripts on highend3d.com. it is one of the great MEL script resources on the web. and finally i suggest that you pick up a book on MEL. there are currently three on the market:

MEL Scripting for Maya Animators - written by good ol' Dr. Mark Wilkins the 3rd et al.

The Mel Companion: Maya Scripting for 3d Artists - written by Sir. David Stripinis

Complete Maya Programming: An Extensive Guide to MEL and C++ API - written by Rev. David Gould Sr.

these books are more worth their weight in gold.

if you're looking for a good text editor look at these two threads:
Blue Mel Studio - anyone using it? (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57675)
Q: IDE for mel? (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56606)

Hey Levitateme,

I posted a question not unlike this just a little while ago.

One of the tips I got was:
http://www.ewertb.com/maya/

Which I found very good.

Good luck!

Dr. Mark Wilkins the 3rd?

:D

(Interestingly enough, there's a Mark Wilkins who works in sound editorial and a Mark Wilkins who is a color timer at a post house we used on one of our commercial jobs at PDI, so maybe I really AM the 3rd. I dropped out of grad school, though, so I'm no doctor...)

hehe.

i was going to say that you were the National Advisor to the United States Ministery of MEL Scripting, which wouldn't be too far fetched... but either way doctorate or no doctorate Mr. Wilkins knows his stuff
